Responsibilities

Mayo Clinic is seeking an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary ophthalmologist to serve as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

This is a premier leadership opportunity within one of the world's leading academic medical centers. The Chair will provide strategic, academic, clinical, and operational leadership for a highly respected department, advancing Mayo Clinic's integrated model of care while championing excellence across clinical practice, education, research, innovation, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The successful candidate will lead with a strong commitment to Mayo Clinic's core value that the needs of the patient come first and will foster a culture of professionalism, teamwork, inclusion, innovation, and academic achievement. The Chair will advance the three Mayo Clinic shields of clinical practice, education, and research while helping define the future direction of ophthalmology in Florida and across the Mayo Clinic enterprise.

About the Department

The Department of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic Florida is a multidisciplinary academic practice that delivers comprehensive medical and surgical eye care across a broad range of subspecialties. The department serves as a tertiary and quaternary referral center and collaborates extensively with colleagues across Mayo Clinic to care for patients with complex ocular and systemic diseases. 

Clinical expertise includes:

  • Cataract and refractive surgery
  • Cornea and external disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Retina and vitreoretinal surgery
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Ocular oncology
  • Oculoplastic and orbital surgery
  • Comprehensive ophthalmology
  • Complex anterior segment surgery

Faculty work closely with specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, endocrinology, rheumatology, transplant medicine, and other disciplines within Mayo Clinic's integrated practice model. The department also supports nationally recognized fellowship programs and is deeply committed to training future leaders in ophthalmology. 

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to Mayo Clinic Florida leadership and working closely with enterprise leaders, the Chair will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and vision for the Department of Ophthalmology.
  • Advance clinical excellence, quality, patient experience, access, and growth.
  • Recruit, retain, mentor, and develop exceptional faculty and staff.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Strengthen and expand multidisciplinary partnerships across Mayo Clinic.
  • Support and enhance educational programs, faculty development, and learner experiences.
  • Advance clinical, translational, and outcomes research initiatives.
  • Promote scholarly activity and national visibility for the department.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of departmental resources and operational effectiveness.
  • Serve as a key institutional leader within Mayo Clinic Florida and across the Mayo Clinic enterprise.
