A Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFII) is a pilot certified to teach instrument flight rules (IFR) to students. CFIIs help pilots develop the skills needed to fly solely by reference to instruments, which is essential for poor visibility and advanced certifications. Their responsibilities include teaching ground lessons, conducting flight training, and preparing students for instrument rating exams.
To thrive as a Certified Flight Instructor - Instrument (CFII), you need advanced aviation knowledge, strong instructional abilities, and, at minimum, a commercial pilot certificate with instrument and CFII ratings. Familiarity with flight training devices, avionics, FAA regulations, and electronic logbook systems is crucial. Exceptional communication, patience, and situational awareness help CFII instructors support students and ensure a positive learning environment. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining flight safety standards and effectively teaching complex instrument flying concepts.
As a CFII, your work schedule can vary and often depends on student demand, weather conditions, and the operating hours of the flight school or training facility. You may conduct both ground and flight instruction sessions, sometimes early in the morning, late in the evening, or on weekends to accommodate student schedules. The work environment ranges from classroom and simulator settings to in-flight training in various aircraft under instrument flight rules (IFR). Summary
The Stage Check Airman position is responsible for evaluating students in accordance with training course outlines, FAA Airman Certification Standards and Practical Test Standards, and general operations procedures.
Essential Functions
• Ensuring operational safety and conformance to company, local, and FAA regulations and policies
• Conducting Part 141 stage checks for approved courses in accordance with the current approved training course outline (TCO)
• Provide detailed debriefings to instructors, team leaders, managers or other employees
• Provide guidance to instructors regarding improvements to students’ training
• Maintain the quality (pass rate) of flight training at or above 80% through consistent and comprehensive
• See that each assigned student is re-scheduled if a training delay occurs
• Maintain accurate Talon records regarding evaluations
• Conduct student training record audits
• Ensure that the policies and procedures of the General Operations Manual are maintained
• Assists the Manager of Flight Standards in developing training standards for training procedures
• Assists the Manager of Flight Standards in the continuous development and improvement of the pilot
• Submits required reports as directed
• Works with the Manager of Flight Standards concerning issues related to pilot job performance issues
• Additional duties as assigned by the Manager of Flight Standards

This position also requires a person to maneuver an aircraft for extended periods of time in all various types of weather conditions. The long days can be physically demanding.
