What is a CFA?

A CFA, or Chartered Financial Analyst, is a professional credential offered by the CFA Institute to finance and investment professionals. Earning the CFA designation demonstrates expertise in investment analysis, portfolio management, and ethical standards. The program consists of three rigorous exams and requires candidates to have relevant work experience. CFAs are highly respected in fields such as asset management, research analysis, and financial advising.

What does a CFA do?

As a chartered financial analyst (CFA), your job is to help with investment analysis and portfolio management. The CFA Institute, an independent organization that assesses the skill of candidates in areas like money management, security analysis, ethics, and accounting, offers this certification to applicants who pass its tests. Holders of the CFA certification often work closely with finance and banking companies to manage projects and provide documentation for clients and investors. This certification does not open positions all by itself, but many employers look for CFA certification in addition to other education and experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CFA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CFA, you need strong analytical abilities, deep knowledge of financial markets, investment principles, and typically the CFA charter, which requires passing three rigorous exams. Proficiency with financial modeling tools, Bloomberg terminals, and advanced Excel functions is essential. Exceptional attention to detail, ethical judgment, and effective communication skills help set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for making sound investment decisions, maintaining client trust, and succeeding in the highly competitive finance industry.

What are some common challenges faced by CFAs when working on cross-functional teams?

Chartered Financial Analysts (CFAs) often collaborate with professionals from other departments, such as marketing, operations, or IT, especially when working on investment strategies or risk assessments. One common challenge is effectively communicating complex financial concepts to colleagues who may not have a finance background. CFAs must also balance differing priorities and timelines, ensuring that financial insights are integrated into broader business decisions. Developing strong interpersonal and presentation skills can help overcome these hurdles and lead to more successful collaborations.

Senior FP&A Consultant (CA, CPA, CFA)

Limelight Software

Toronto, ON โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 15 days ago

Job description

Limelight is redefining how finance teams plan, forecast, and report. Our modern FP&A platform replaces clunky, spreadsheet-heavy processes with dynamic, connected, and scalable financial models—giving finance professionals more time to uncover insights, influence strategy, and drive the business forward.

About the Role

If you’re an FP&A or corporate finance professional who loves solving complex problems, improving processes, and turning financial models into business impact, this role is for you.

As a Senior Finance Consultant, you’ll become a trusted advisor to finance leaders and their teams. You’ll own customer implementations from discovery through go-live, combining your finance expertise, technical curiosity, and consulting skills to build planning and reporting solutions that transform how companies operate.

You’ll work directly with customers to understand the mechanics of their businesses, challenge outdated processes, and design scalable solutions for budgeting, forecasting, workforce planning, reporting, and analysis.

This is a high-impact, highly visible role at the intersection of finance, technology, and strategy. You won’t just configure software—you’ll help finance teams elevate their influence across the organization.

What You’ll Own
  • Lead end-to-end implementations for new Limelight customers, from requirements gathering and solution design through go-live and ongoing support.
  • Get inside each customer’s business model to understand its key drivers, planning processes, reporting needs, and strategic priorities.
  • Design, configure, test, and validate sophisticated financial models, templates, dashboards, and management reports.
  • Translate real-world finance requirements into scalable solutions across budgets, forecasts, headcount plans, allocations, scenario models, and more.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to customer finance teams throughout onboarding and implementation.
  • Recommend FP&A best practices that improve modeling, reporting, visibility, and decision-making.
  • Lead engaging training sessions that build user confidence and accelerate adoption.
  • Manage project timelines, deliverables, dependencies, and risks while keeping stakeholders aligned and confident.
  • Partner closely with Limelight’s Product and Data teams to deliver exceptional outcomes.
  • Build lasting customer relationships and identify opportunities to expand the value Limelight delivers after go-live.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in FP&A, corporate finance, financial consulting, accounting systems, financial analysis, or financial software implementation.
  • A strong understanding of budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, management reporting, and financial planning cycles.
  • Hands-on experience with Excel and platforms such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Workday Adaptive Planning, or other ERP and FP&A solutions.
  • The ability to translate complex financial concepts into clear, practical, and scalable solutions.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • A track record of managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • A sharp analytical mindset and a genuine enthusiasm for solving challenging problems.
  • The confidence to take ownership, ask thoughtful questions, and guide customers toward better outcomes.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, collaborative SaaS environment.
  • CPA, CFA, PMP, or a similar designation is an asset.
You’ll Thrive Here If You
  • Want to help finance teams move beyond spreadsheets and become more strategic.
  • Get energized by solving the planning and reporting challenges you’ve experienced firsthand.
  • Enjoy learning how different businesses make money, allocate resources, and measure performance.
  • Want to build a powerful mix of finance, consulting, technology, and leadership skills.
  • Love taking ownership and seeing a solution progress from initial idea to measurable impact.
  • Believe the future of FP&A should be faster, smarter, and far more connected.
