Job description

Primary Summary:

The YMCA focuses on strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The instructor demonstrates the capacity to lead group exercise classes and training groups in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. The instructor is proficient in various group exercise disciplines offered and defined by the YMCA. The instructor is able to provide a quality experience to members and guests focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Essential Functions:

1. Leads energizing, engaging, safe, effective, and educational group classes, utilizing a variety of equipment as directed by the supervisor to meet the YMCA mission and goals.

2. Maintains current certifications, including group exercise certifications, CPR/AED/First Aid, and required Human Resources courses.

3. Maintains an accurate timesheet and submits as requested by the supervisor.

4. Notifies the supervisor promptly of emergency situations that would prevent the instructor from teaching the assigned class/group.

5. Takes responsibility for covering assigned classes.

6. Provides support and information to members to assist them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Stays abreast of industry standards and trends through reasonable, proactive efforts.

7. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.

8. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; takes responsibility for the health and safety of others through an understanding of the EAP manual, location of AEDs and first aid kits, and other emergency procedures.

9. Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.

10. Participates in the annual campaign fundraising activities as requested by the supervisor.

11. Takes responsibility for room cleanliness and equipment maintenance. Reports maintenance requests to the supervisor in a timely manner.

12. Arrives in time to ensure prompt setup completion and allow for greeting and welcoming members before the scheduled class begins.

13. Develops inclusive playlists suitable for diverse YMCA audiences and masters the use of audio equipment, including speakers and microphones.

14. Utilizes personal devices and equipment to connect to technology platforms provided by the YMCA.

15. Selects appropriate athletic attire as a YMCA fitness instructor, as this is essential for demonstrating professionalism, effective exercise techniques, and modesty. Choosing attire that balances functionality and professionalism enhances the fitness environment and ensures inclusivity for all participants.

16. Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

Employees and volunteers who do not directly supervise children and teens will:

1. Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens.

2. Attend required abuse risk management training annually.

3. Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

4. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

5. Adhere to job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Possesses a national group exercise certification by an approved agency &/or employee acquires one in the time allotted by the supervisor.

2. Obtains specialty certification(s) as required

3. The ability to lead and actively participate in assigned classes.
