Job description

Certified Medical Assistant

Certified Medical Assistants are responsible for performing a range of administrative tasks, including: performing data entry tasks to document patient records within NCHC databases and maintaining patient files. Coordinating daily administrative activities, greeting patients and checking patients in and out for their appointments. Providing direct care to patients in a clinical setting supporting the efforts of physicians, practitioners and licensed nurses. This job has routine access to individual health information including the patients' entire medical records on a need-to-know basis only. All employees of NCHC are responsible to practice good risk management, quality assurance, and deliver excellent internal and external customer service. All employees must understand and exemplify the organization's mission, vision, and core values.

  • Provides direct care to patients in a clinical setting supporting the efforts of physicians, practitioners and licensed nurses.
  • Prepares examination rooms for delivery of health services.
  • Ensures lab slips, x-rays, and diagnostic reports are on the chart at the time of patient visit.
  • Cleans, sterilizes and maintains medical equipment by the appropriate method.
  • Takes and documents patients' medical histories and vital signs.
  • Performs EKG, phlebotomy, tuberculin skin tests, hearing and vision screenings on patients.
  • Prepares patients for examination, treatment and procedures.
  • Provides some patient education under the direction of the licensed nurse or health care provider.
  • Assists with referrals in various medical disciplines and specialties, dentistry and other allied services.
  • Screens calls, schedules appointments, and calls patients as necessary.
  • Inputs data such as encounter check-outs, data-entry for collaboratives and audits.
  • Takes and documents patient complaints.
  • Assists with interpretation and translation for non-English speaking patients if possible.
  • Assists with front desk registration and in the Medical Records Department as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum High school diploma.
  • Must have an active certification from a nationally recognized Medical Assistant/Technician Certifying Board/ Registry.
  • Minimum one year of previous experience in an ambulatory care setting or completion of an externship at NCHC.
  • Active certifications for EKG and Phlebotomy is a plus.
  • CBSPD Certification or will be testing in 1 year for certification.
  • Bilingual capability in any language predominantly spoken by NCHC patients preferred.
