Senior Special Inspector About Us

STRATA provides professional geotechnical engineering consulting, construction inspection, and materials testing services across the region. Weโ€™re committed to safety, integrity, teamwork, and respect, and weโ€™re looking for team members who share those values. Our team of professionals works closely with contractors, architects, and engineers to support quality and compliance across a wide range of projects. We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to join our team in Boise, Idaho.

About the Role

The CWI works closely with contractors, fabricators, architects, engineers, and project stakeholders to verify compliance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and approved construction documents. This role performs field inspections, welding observations, and nondestructive examinations to ensure the quality and integrity of structural steel construction projects. The ideal candidate is a safety-focused professional with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering accurate, timely inspection services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform visual welding inspections of structural steel fabrication and erection activities.
  • Verify compliance with AWS, AISC, ASTM, ICC, IBC, and project-specific requirements.
  • Review welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder qualification records.
  • Observe welding operations and ensure approved procedures and materials are being utilized.
  • Inspect bolted and welded structural steel connections.
  • Document inspection findings and prepare detailed field reports.
  • Coordinate with contractors, fabricators, engineers, and project representatives to communicate findings and resolve deficiencies.
  • Utilize, maintain, and calibrate inspection and testing equipment.
  • Perform Welder Qualification Test Records (WQTR).
  • Support Quality Management System (QMS) requirements and company safety initiatives.
  • Assist with training and professional development of inspection personnel.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
  • Working knowledge of AWS welding codes and standards, including AWS D1.1.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, welding symbols, and fabrication documents.
  • Experience performing welding inspections, structural steel inspections, fabrication shop inspections, or related QA/QC activities.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to travel, work overtime, and occasionally work weekends or holidays as project needs require.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ICC Structural Welding Special Inspector certification.
  • ICC Structural Bolting Special Inspector certification.
  • ASNT certifications in: Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Other applicable nondestructive testing (NDT) methods.
  • NACE, AMPP, or other coating inspection certifications.
  • Additional construction materials testing and special inspection certifications are a plus.
