Job description

RK&K is seeking a dedicated Assistant Resident Engineer to support and manage NCDOT construction projects in Boone, NC. As an Assistant Resident Engineer, you will use your expertise in roadway/bridge construction, project management, and quality control (QA/QC) in support of complex highway and bridge construction projects.
Essential Functions
  • Directly supervise and provide engineering-level support for transportation technicians and inspectors
  • Provide prompt, professional public relations responses to various inquiries from the public, NCDOT officials, and other government agencies
  • Conduct daily coordination with contractors, NCDOT and project staff
  • Make critical field engineering decisions
  • Conduct environmental reviews and manage erosion control efforts
  • Perform contract administration and project management activities such as estimates, claims and change orders, supplemental agreements, monthly construction meetings, environmental compliance etc
  • Monitor and resolve maintenance of traffic (MOT) issues as they occur
  • Coordinate utility relocations
  • Manage transportation technician teams as needed
  • Participate in progress meetings and provide regular updates to the resident engineer and project stakeholders
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with safety regulations, plans and specifications

Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management or related from an ABET accredited University
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in similar roles
  • Experience reading and interpreting highway and bridge construction plans and contracts
  • Experience managing and/or training teams of technicians or inspectors
  • Contract Administration and/or Project Management experience on highway construction projects
  • Must have experience in MS Office / Office 365 and the ability to use mobile technology
  • Extensive knowledge of general concepts, practices, theories used in construction, construction inspection and surveying

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) or Certified Associate Construction Manager (CACM)
  • Experience managing NCDOT Projects

Physical Demands
This role requires the ability to perform field inspections on active construction sites. The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, navigate uneven terrain, and climb ladders or stairs. Ability to lift and carry inspection equipment and materials weighing up to 20-30 pounds on an occasional basis, with or without reasonable accommodation. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and may include exposure to construction-related hazards.
