As a CEMML environmental specialist, your daily tasks may include conducting field surveys, analyzing environmental data, preparing technical reports, and assisting with the development and implementation of natural resource management plans for military lands. You’ll often collaborate with military personnel, other scientists, and government agencies to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and meet project goals. Much of your time may be divided between office work—such as documentation and data analysis—and fieldwork at installation sites. This dynamic environment offers opportunities to work both independently and as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team.
CEMML, or the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands, typically hires environmental scientists, natural resource managers, or related professionals with strong backgrounds in environmental policy, ecology, and project management—usually with a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, NEPA compliance, and federal land management systems is essential, as are relevant certifications such as PMP or GIS Professional. Exceptional communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help individuals excel in cross-functional roles and adapt to the unique demands of military installations. These combined skills ensure effective stewardship of natural resources while supporting complex government and military operations.
A CEMML job refers to a position with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML), a research and service organization at Colorado State University. CEMML jobs typically involve natural resource management, environmental planning, cultural resource preservation, and sustainability efforts on military lands. Employees work alongside government agencies to ensure compliance with environmental regulations while supporting military readiness. These positions can range from fieldwork to policy development and often require expertise in environmental science, ecology, or related fields.
