Position Summary The Public Works Maintenance Worker is a seasonal position that is primarily responsible for assisting with the day-to-day maintenance and operation of streets, parks, playgrounds, and other public facilities under the general supervision of the Public Works Operations Foreman. This position will perform and operate maintenance tasks and equipment. This position will interact with the public, businesses, and other groups in a professional, courteous, safe, and respectful manner.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Establish a friendly and positive rapport with facility customers, vendors, employees, general public, and promote a respectful and friendly environment for all in the facility. Performs maintenance duties on turf such as but not limited to mowing, weed whipping, fertilizing, spraying, aerating, and irrigation. Report any potentially dangerous conditions, accidents, and damage to the Public Works management.
Responsible for maintaining and basic cleaning the facilities, grounds, trails, and public land such as but not limited to sweeping and mopping floors, garbage collection, cleaning all surfaces (table, chairs, benches, etc.) and spills, weed whipping, and picking up litter. Assists in the maintenance of plants, trees, leaves, shrubs, and plant care projects and transplanting trees. Responsible for maintaining safety procedures and enforcing rules
Drives light trucks and equipment in the loading, hauling and unloading of equipment, material, gravel, sand, concrete, asphalt and other material. Performs cemetery maintenance, such as but no limited to digging graves, mowing, and weed whipping. Operate mowers, rakes, shovels, power tools, weed whippers, other tools as needed.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of streets to include crack sealing, patching, and sweeping. Assists in signage repair to include sign repair and replacement. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of public works practices and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with general public and staff while displaying political agility and discretion. Ability to follow-through with work assignments, provide self-direction, and maintain safety procedures.
Ability to provide good customer service skills to a diverse customer base and effectively communicate with customers, general public, staff, and others. Ability to work independently, making decisions based on established City policy, standards and requirements. Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written assignments.
Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or equivalent Must be 18 years or older. Ability to lift 25lbs. Prior experience working with tools and materials commonly used in yard maintenance.
Must be available to work weekdays daytime, evenings, and weekends. Valid MN Driver's license with good driving history. Must be able to physically perform all essential duties of the position.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Prior public works experience. Supplemental Information WORK SCHEDULE Shifts can vary during operating hours from Monday through Sunday daytime and evening shifts. SUPERVISION Does not have any direct reports.
This position works independently with moderate supervision. WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental and Physical Conditions Possible exposure to inclement weather conditions. Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, walking for prolonged periods of time; kneeling, climbing, bending, and stooping, moderate lifting and carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate/heavy weight; general manual dexterity; adequate hearing, vision, and speech required; and must be able to evaluate situations and react appropriately.
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, or toxic agents.
