Job description

Job Summary

The Laboratory Technician III will be responsible for performing and overseeing cement laboratory operations, including sampling, preparation, and testing of materials in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards. This position performs advanced quality tests, analyzes data, and prepares detailed technical reports while ensuring accurate recordkeeping. The role involves coordinating daily lab activities and collaborating with chemists and management to improve testing methods and procedures. Additionally, the technician mentors junior staff, supports audits and inspections, and maintains a clean, safe, and compliant laboratory environment. Strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and lead others are essential for success in this role.

Compensation
Responsibilities
  • Assist laboratory personnel on duties that pertain to sampling, preparation, and testing of cement
  • Perform sample preparations and standard quality tests on Portland cement (in accordance with the most current ASTM and AASHTO standards)
  • Maintain clear and accurate records on test and quality data
  • Oversee the Physical lab daily operations
  • Analyze data, prepare detailed technical reports, and present findings to the Laboratory Manager and other stakeholders
  • Collaborate with chemists and management to develop new testing methods and optimize existing procedures
  • Coordinate with the Laboratory Manager to plan and prioritize workload, ensuring timely completion of high-priority tasks
  • Assist in laboratory audits and inspections, and ensure all documentation is up-to-date and accurate
  • Mentor and train Lab Technician I and II staff in advanced techniques, laboratory best practices, and safety procedures
  • Ensure the laboratory is properly maintained by keeping all work areas clean, organized, and compliant with housekeeping standards, and by disposing of samples in the appropriate designated waste containers
  • Perform any other tasks as directed by the Laboratory Manager to support laboratory operations and research initiatives
Education
  • High school diploma
  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent preferred 
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in similar roles in cement plant labs, Technical Centers performing cement standard tests, or similar - 7 Years' experience preferred
  • Possess a strong understanding and hands-on expertise in the key tests related to cement, including all testing associated to ASTM C150, C595, C618, C989, and additional tests such as C157, C1038, C452, C1012, C1260, C1567, and any other relevant test
  • Possess certifications relevant to cement testing, preferred
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on complex tasks
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities, with experience mentoring and training junior staff
  • Proficiency in data analysis and report writing, with strong attention to detail
  • Requires the following motions: climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, stretching, sitting, walking on uneven ground and stairs
  • Able to work cooperatively with others
  • Overtime work will be required as needed
  • Must meet OSHA 10 guidelines and be able to follow all CalPortland Safety Policies
  • ANSI approved PPE will be provided and must be used when required
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in English
Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration/clearance as well as ongoing alcohol and drug testing. In accordance with the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, for work that will be performed in the San Francisco area, qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records will be considered for employment.
