Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Biological Sciences invites applicants for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position with an emphasis in Cellular and Molecular Biology with a focus on biomedical sciences. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the health and medical sciences program, contributing expertise in molecular and cellular mechanisms of human health and disease. 

The Department of Biological Sciences at Humboldt is dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education, hands-on research, and fostering an inclusive and supportive academic community. Our faculty expertise spans cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, physiology, ecology, and organismal biology.  We have a strong history in training students in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine through our California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)-funded Bridges Scholars Program and are excited to open the Cal Poly Humboldt-CIRM Shared Resources Laboratory. will provide state of the art research and teaching facilities available to our new cellular and molecular biology colleague. This position will also contribute to the new Health and Medical Sciences B.S. degree program. As one of the academic programs included in our university's transformation to California's newest polytechnic university, this position will contribute to the applied, experiential learning and active mentoring that will prepare students for graduate school, health professions, and careers in biotechnology and related fields.

Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: BIOL 350 Cell Biology, BIOL 340 Genetics, and BIOL 105 Principles of Biology.  In year three of the appointment, the successful candidate may also be assigned BIOL 440 Molecular Genetics Laboratory, BIOL 450 Cell Biology Laboratory, BIOL 455 Cellular and Gene Therapy, BIOL 544 Stem Cell Biology, and/or ZOOL 476 Developmental Biology, depending on the expertise of this new faculty member. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities that meet the department's standards required for retention, tenure, and promotion.

We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee's qualifications and experience. The Assistant Professor Classification annual salary range for this position is $74,652 - $158,688; the anticipated starting annual salary is $80,000.

An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Molecular & Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related Biomedical field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:

• Record of training or experience in the field of cell biology, molecular genetics, or a closely related biomedical field;
• Excellence in, or clear potential for, university-level teaching and creating a student-centered learning environment;
• Evidence of, or clear potential for, conducting and publishing original research on cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, or a closely related biomedical discipline in peer-reviewed journals;
• Record of effective teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
• Commitment to teaching excellence that incorporates a variety of methodologies at undergraduate and Master's level;
• Experience with, or potential for establishing an active research program with external support that can be sustained at a primarily undergraduate institution;
• Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse student and/or research populations;
• Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity addressing issues of concern facing students from diverse backgrounds in higher education; and
• Record of, or potential for, involving undergraduate and graduate students in research and scholarly activity.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

• A record of teaching effectiveness in undergraduate cell biology and genetics courses;
• An established extramurally-funded research program in cell biology or genetics; and
• Commitment to participating in professional development opportunities that build effectiveness in areas of inclusion, intercultural communication, and advancing diversity.

Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Pursuant to the California State University (CSU) Out-of-State Employment Policy (effective January 1, 2022), hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside of the state of California is prohibited. The employee must be able to accept on-campus instruction, as assigned, and come to campus when needed. The CSU also prohibits hiring and retaining employees working permanently from a business location outside of the United States.
