How much do cellular biologist jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for cellular biologist in Indiana is $33.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $27.69 and $38.41 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a cellular biologist do?

A cellular biologist studies the structure and function of cells, often conducting experiments in laboratories using microscopes and molecular techniques. They analyze cellular processes, contribute to medical research, and may work with tools like cell culture and imaging equipment to understand diseases or develop treatments.

What are some common challenges faced by cellular biologists when working on research projects?

Cellular biologists often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting experimental protocols, managing contamination risks in cell cultures, and interpreting complex data from advanced imaging or sequencing techniques. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential, especially when integrating findings with those from genetics, biochemistry, or computational biology. Additionally, staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving technologies and methodologies can be demanding but is critical for successful research outcomes.

What is the difference between Cellular Biologist vs Microbiologist?

AspectCellular BiologistMicrobiologist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Biology, Cell Biology, or related field; Ph.D. often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Microbiology, Biology, or related; Ph.D. common for research roles
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, biotech companies focusing on cell functionsLaboratories, healthcare, environmental agencies studying microorganisms
Industry UsageAcademic research, biotech, pharmaceuticals, healthcareHealthcare, environmental, food industry, research institutions

While both Cellular Biologists and Microbiologists work in biological research, Cellular Biologists focus on cell structures and functions, often working with human, animal, or plant cells. Microbiologists study microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Their roles overlap in research settings, but their specific focus areas and environments differ.

What careers involve Cellular Biology?

Cellular biologists work in research laboratories, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology companies, studying cell functions and processes. Careers include research scientist, laboratory technician, biomedical researcher, and academic professor, often requiring knowledge of microscopy, cell culture, and molecular techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cellular Biologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cellular Biologist, you need a strong background in cell biology, molecular biology techniques, and a relevant degree such as a bachelor's, master's, or PhD in biology or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, cell culture systems, fluorescence microscopy, and data analysis software like ImageJ or FlowJo is commonly required, along with certifications in laboratory safety. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for designing experiments, troubleshooting, and presenting findings. These skills ensure rigorous research practices, accurate data interpretation, and meaningful scientific contributions in cellular biology.

What biology jobs pay over $100k?

Cellular biologists working in industry research, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical companies often earn over $100,000 annually, especially with advanced degrees and experience. Positions such as senior research scientists or biotech managers typically require specialized skills, laboratory expertise, and sometimes management responsibilities.

How much do cell biologists earn?

Cell biologists typically earn a median annual salary of around $60,000 to $80,000, with higher earnings possible for those with advanced degrees, specialized skills, or experience in research or industry. Salaries can vary based on location, employer, and level of expertise.

Job description

Biology - Graduates - AI TrainingAbout Prolific

Prolific is not just another player in the AI space โ€“ we are building the biggest pool of quality human data in the world.

Over 35,000 AI developers, researchers, and organizations use Prolific to gather data from paid study participants with a wide variety of experiences, knowledge, and skills.

The role
We're looking for Biology Experts and Life Science Professionals to join our Expert Network to help train and evaluate cutting-edge AI models using real scientific expertise. If you have the necessary experience, we'll send you a quick 10- to 15-minute test to assess your skills and suitability for AI tasks. If successful, you'll be invited to join Prolific as a participant, where you'll get paid to train and evaluate powerful AI models.

Researchers looking for your skills tend to pay up to $60 per hour. You must be prepared to complete paid tasks that require one hour of uninterrupted work, though many are shorter.

What you'll bring
  • Education: a BS, MS, or PhD in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Pharmacology, or a related Life Sciences field.
  • Professional Experience: years of experience in laboratory research, clinical trials, biotech, or academic instruction.
  • Scientific Literacy: the ability to interpret complex biological data, peer-reviewed journals, and technical protocols with high precision.
  • Critical Thinking: a sharp eye for identifying scientific "hallucinations," such as incorrect protein folding logic, misapplied genetic sequences, or flawed experimental designs.
  • Methodological Knowledge: deep understanding of the scientific method, statistical significance in biological contexts, and regulatory standards.
  • Communication: ability to explain intricate biological pathways or cellular mechanisms in clear, accurate technical prose.
  • A PayPal account to receive payment from our clients
What you'll be doing in the role
  • Evaluate AI-Generated Science: review model responses to complex biological queries for factual accuracy, reasoning, and adherence to current scientific consensus.
  • Fact-Check Technical Claims: validate citations from public databases (e.g., PubMed, NCBI) and ensure AI-generated summaries of research papers are accurate.
  • Assess Experimental Logic: critique AI-proposed experimental designs, including controls, variables, and troubleshooting steps for lab procedures.
  • Annotate Scientific Data: identify and correct errors in model-generated biological sequences, chemical structures, or taxonomy classifications.
  • Ensure Ethical Alignment: verify that AI responses regarding bioethics and sensitive biological data comply with professional and safety standards.
