Job description

Position Summary
The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, seeks an experienced Research Scientist to conduct advanced research in pulmonary biology, immunology, inflammation, and translational medicine. The position applies specialized knowledge in animal models, cellular and molecular biology, respiratory physiology, and biochemical analysis to support independent and collaborative research projects. The successful candidate will contribute to research studies and conduct experimental design, data collection and analysis, interpretation of results, manuscript preparation, grant development, and dissemination of findings through scientific publications and presentations. The position requires moderate autonomy, sound scientific judgment, technical proficiency, collaboration with investigators and research personnel, and responsibility for assigned project deliverables. Research Scientist may work with research animals, primary cells, clinical specimens, and research collaborators.
General Responsibilities
A Research Scientist conducts advanced studies in a specific field, applying specialized knowledge to drive research projects. This role involves data analysis, interpretation of results, and contribution to scientific literature. The position requires collaboration with peers and adherence to established protocols, with moderate autonomy and responsibility for project deliverables. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research collaborator contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Design and execute pulmonary, immunological, inflammatory, toxicological, molecular, biochemical, and translational research experiments using appropriate laboratory and animal-model methodologies.
  2. Optimize protocols and resolve technical challenges to advance assigned research projects.
  3. Investigate mechanisms of lung injury, anomalous lung development, pulmonary inflammation, alveolar macrophage function, and tissue repair, including responses to chlorine exposure and pulmonary aspiration.
  4. Apply advanced scientific theories and concepts to develop evidence-based research conclusions.
  5. Conduct mouse-model studies involving neonatal mice, halogen exposure, lung injury, bronchoalveolar lavage, lung histology, respiratory physiology, pressure-volume loop analysis, and alveolar fluid clearance.
  6. Evaluate experimental outcomes in accordance with approved research protocols and institutional requirements.
  7. Perform molecular and cellular analyses, including RNA and DNA isolation, cDNA preparation, gene cloning, quantitative PCR, immunoblotting, immunostaining, flow cytometry, ELISA, confocal microscopy, and co-immunoprecipitation.
  8. Characterize cellular and molecular responses relevant to pulmonary and immunological disease.
  9. Conduct cellular, molecular, biochemical, and biophysical research procedures using relevant animal, human, and laboratory-derived specimens.
  10. Apply cell culture, cell isolation, cell sorting, gene-expression, protein-analysis, and related techniques to meet research objectives.
  11. Evaluate cellular function, protein characteristics, and metabolic activity using appropriate analytical platforms and established experimental methods.
  12. Analyze and interpret findings to support investigations of biological mechanisms, disease processes, and potential therapeutic approaches.
  13. Develop manuscripts, abstracts, figures, presentations, grant proposals, progress reports, budgets, and supporting scientific documents.
  14. Review current literature and communicate research findings through professional journals, conferences, seminars, and other scientific forums.
  15. Collaborate with principal investigators, research scientists, clinical investigators, trainees, laboratory personnel, and external research partners to advance project objectives.
  16. Provide scientific guidance and technical training to research support personnel, as appropriate.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range : $ 70,425- $ 114,440

Doctorate degree in a related field and one (1) year of related experience OR Master's degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

  • Degree in Biology, Biotechnology, or Bioscience.
