What can I expect during the training period as a CDL trainee?

As a CDL Trainee, you can expect a structured training program that combines classroom instruction with hands-on driving experience under the supervision of certified trainers. You'll learn about federal safety regulations, vehicle inspection procedures, cargo handling, and logbook management while practicing real-world driving scenarios. The training period is designed to prepare you for the CDL skills test and to develop the confidence needed to operate commercial vehicles safely. You may also have opportunities to shadow experienced drivers and gain insights into route planning and customer interactions, setting a strong foundation for your trucking career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the CDL trainee position, and why are they important?

To excel as a CDL Trainee, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and the ability to meet Department of Transportation (DOT) physical requirements. Familiarity with commercial vehicles, basic vehicle maintenance, and eventually obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit are crucial. Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help trainees adapt to rigorous training and collaborate with trainers or team members. These attributes are essential for mastering safe driving practices and ensuring compliance with industry regulations.

Can I get a CDL Trainee job with no experience?

CDL Trainee positions are often available to individuals with little or no driving experience, as they are designed to provide training and instruction. Employers typically require a valid driver's license and may require passing a written knowledge test before beginning hands-on training with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) instructor or trainer.

What is a CDL trainee?

A CDL Trainee job is an entry-level position designed for individuals training to obtain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Trainees typically undergo a structured program that includes classroom instruction, hands-on driving practice, and mentorship from experienced drivers. This role helps prepare candidates for a career in truck driving by teaching them safe driving techniques, regulations, and vehicle operation. Many companies offer paid training or tuition assistance to help trainees earn their CDL.

Full-time, Monday through Friday with early morning starts (typically 5:00 to 6:00 a.m.); home daily, evenings off.

Responsibilities

  • Ride along and learn: Ride with experienced Delivery Drivers on local routes. Assist with safe loading, unloading, and customer service while learning the routes and procedures.
  • Complete CDL training: Participate in our paid in-house Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT). Earn a CDL learner's permit, then your Class A license on the training plan.

  • Maintain credentials: Keep a DOT medical card and CDL learner's permit current throughout training. Stay compliant with company drug, alcohol, and motor vehicle policies.
  • Team dependability: The team depends on each other. Reliable attendance and engaged training keep team resources and support available for the rest of the operation.

Rewards

  • Pay: $18.40- $21.00 per hour during training, increasing to $52,000 to $56,000 per year upon promotion to Delivery Driver
  • Bi-weekly pay, plus on-demand pay available through Paylocity.
  • Up to 20 days of paid time off in your first year.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, plus 401(k) with company match.
  • Free in-house pallet jack certification, completed on the clock.
  • Clear, fast path to Delivery Driver (most Trainees finish in under 90 days), then to Lead, Supervisor, or Manager.
  • Military friendly.

To Apply

Apply online or walk into our Topeka facility during business hours to fill out an application (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Every application gets reviewed. Please note selected candidates will be subject to an MVR & criminal background check and a pre-employment physical/drug screen.
