What is a CDL driving instructor?

CDL Driving Instructors are professionals who teach individuals how to safely operate commercial motor vehicles such as trucks and buses. Their goal is to prepare students to pass the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam and become safe, competent drivers in the trucking or transportation industry.

To thrive as a CDL Driving Instructor, you need extensive commercial driving experience, a valid CDL license, and knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations. Familiarity with modern driving simulators, electronic logbooks, and safety inspection systems is often required. Patience, clear communication, and strong instructional abilities help students learn complex driving skills and safety protocols. These competencies ensure effective training, regulatory compliance, and the development of safe, skilled commercial drivers.

What are some common challenges CDL driving instructors face when training new drivers?
