What are some common challenges faced by CDL drivers working night shifts, and how can they be managed?

CDL drivers on night shifts often encounter challenges such as staying alert during late hours, dealing with reduced visibility, and experiencing disruptions to their natural sleep cycles. To manage these, many employers encourage structured rest breaks, proper hydration, and maintaining consistent sleep schedules even on days off. Using appropriate lighting, staying connected with dispatch, and practicing good sleep hygiene can also help drivers stay safe and effective on the road. Many companies provide resources and training to support drivers' well-being during night operations.

What are CDL Driver Night Shift jobs?

CDL Driver Night Shift jobs involve operating commercial vehicles, such as trucks or tractor-trailers, during overnight hours. These drivers are responsible for transporting goods or materials safely and efficiently while adhering to federal and state regulations. Night shift drivers often work late evening to early morning hours, which can help avoid daytime traffic and meet tight delivery schedules. This role typically requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and may involve long hours, overnight routes, or regional travel. Employers look for reliable drivers who can work independently and manage the unique challenges of nighttime driving.

Job description

CDL-A Driver – (Night Shift)
Indianapolis, IN

Are you a night owl who does your best work under the moonlight? Do you prefer open roads, steady routes, and getting the job done without a lot of noise or interruptions?

If you like the idea of keeping things moving while everyone else sleeps- this might be your kind of role.

Kirby Risk is looking for a CDL-A Driver to run product between our distribution center and branch locations – quietly keeping everything on track behind the scenes.

At Kirby Risk we know great drivers don’t need micromanaging – they need consistency, respect, and a clear path to do their job well.

At Kirby Risk, we’ve built our driver program around what matters most: Time, Money, and Respect.

What You’ll Do as a CDL-A Transfer Driver

You’ll be behind-the-scenes engine of our operation-moving product from point A to point B so our branches are restocked, organized, and ready to go when the day shift rolls in.

You’ll

  • Run scheduled routes between our distribution center and branch locations
    • So every branch wakes up ready for business
  • Operate CDL-A vehicles safely and professionally
    • Because safe, consistent runs keep everything moving the way it should
  • Unload, load, and secure product
    • So product arrives in the same shape it left in
  • Communicate any issues or delays
    • So the team can adjust and keep things rolling
  • Perform DOT-required Pre and Post Trip inspections
    • So your equipment stays safe, compliant, and ready to roll every shift
  • Follow DOT and company safety standards
    • So every shift ends the way it started: Safely
  • Keep your truck clean
    • Take pride in your equipment, helping keep everything running smoothly
  • Represent Kirby Risk professionally at all time
    • How we show up reflects the standard of our entire operation

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Valid Class A CDL license and clean driving record
  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Proven track record of safe, reliable driving
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfortable working independently
  • Strong attention to detail and time management

What to Expect in This Role

  • Night Routes: 9:00p – End of Route
  • Monday–Friday with Backup days built into the schedule
  • Home Daily
  • Overtime after 40 hours
  • Modern, well-maintained equipment backed by full-service maintenance support

This is a role where you can put your head down, run your route, and go home knowing you kept things moving.
