Job description

Description The Montgomery County Department of Parks-Southern Parks Division seeks an experienced, dynamic Principal Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker-CDL to join the division's Rapid Response Team located in Rockville, MD. Under the direction of a Parks Maintenance Leader, this position maintains parks, trails, athletic fields, and facilities through routine maintenance, repairs, and cleanup. The role responds to safety issues and urgent maintenance needs, operates a variety of equipment and vehicles, supports volunteer and community events, and helps keep parks safe, clean, and welcoming.

A Class-A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required and must be obtained within 12 months of hire. The position offers training, growth opportunities, and a primarily day-shift schedule with occasional nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. The Southern Parks Division supports both local and regional recreation across some of the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County.

The division maintains over 200 parks and operates a large fleet of equipment to keep park facilities, athletic fields, trails, and playgrounds safe, functional, and ready for daily use. Perform park, trail, athletic field, facility, and grounds maintenance. Perform repairs and preventive maintenance. Operate Commission vehicles, including CDL-required vehicles.

Operate and transport equipment, trailers, and attachments. Maintain park cleanliness and site upkeep. Volunteer Coordination & Event Support Assist with volunteer and community cleanup projects.

Support event setup, takedown, and logistics. Safety & Administrative Responsibilities Conduct inspections and monitor safety. Maintain inventory and work records.

Provide limited staff support and other duties as assigned. Seasonal Duties Support seasonal maintenance and weather recovery operations. Important Working Characteristics Ability to operate trucks, trailers, CDL vehicles, and maintenance equipment.

Basic groundskeeping, maintenance, and repair skills. Ability to prioritize and complete urgent work assignments. Ability to follow instructions and complete basic documentation.

Ability to perform physical outdoor work in all weather conditions. Working Conditions Primarily works outside but may work inside on occasion or as assigned. Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps etc.)

Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds. An essential employee required to be on-call 24 hours for any emergencies. Must be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED). Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total four (4) years. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.

Pass Commission medical examination. Depending upon the area of assignment, some positions in this class require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including: Maryland Department of Agriculture's Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment; Maryland Department of Agriculture's Fertilizer Applicator certification; and National Playground Safety Institute certification. Supplemental Information Classification Specification Principal Parks Facilities Maintenance Worker-CDL May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.
