Job description

Description General Description: This is a technical position. The incumbent performs routine repairs on Utility equipment. Assignments will involve work in one of the following areas: (1) electrical/mechanical, (2) utility construction, (3) sewer collection operations (4) distribution operations.

Organization: The Utility Technician is part of Hanover County's Career Development Program (CD). The Utility Technician Ladder has four levels ranging from Utility Technician I to Utility Technician III and Senior Utility Technician for only the electrical/mechanical classification. Incumbents report to a Utility Supervisor or Superintendent and supervise no staff; however, Senior Utility Technicians and Utility Technicians III may serve as workflow leaders to lower-level Utility Technicians.

Essential Functions: Operates and organizes the use of utility tools, equipment, and vehicles. Assures all safety regulations are met (e.g. VDOT standards for traffic control and flags traffic during VDOT right of way repairs)

Troubleshoots and helps manage emergency situations. Maintains maintenance records and efficiently completes work orders. Electrical/Mechanical - Conducts preventive maintenance and repairs.

Maintains, installs and repairs utility electrical/mechanical equipment as needed. Construction Repairs and installs water and sewer lines as needed. Operates construction equipment as required.

Collections - Cleans wastewater lines/lift stations, filming lines and laterals as necessary. Operates lift stations. Distribution - Maintains and flushes waterlines.

Helps operate well systems, collects and analyzes water samples. Calibrates residential meters and performs residential pressure tests as needed. Working Conditions: A.

Hazards May be exposed to chemicals, dust, fumes, noise, vibrations and repetitiveness B. Environment Field - May be exposed to adverse weather C. Physical Effort Heavy manual work Intermittent lifting of objects weighing at least 50 lbs D.

Non-exempt Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to understand and to follow oral and written instructions. Familiarity with the equipment and techniques necessary to perform assigned work tasks, preferred. Education, Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required with related experience preferred.

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Higher levels on the Career Ladder require additional experience and training. Special Conditions: Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License at hire; Class A Commercial Driver's License within 24 months of employment for all technicians EXCEPT for DISTRIBUTION technicians.
