How much do ccsds jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for ccsds in the United States is $31,873.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $28,500.00 and $29,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CCSDS engineer, you need a solid background in aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related field, with strong knowledge of space communication protocols and standards. Familiarity with CCSDS standards, space data link protocols, simulation tools, and relevant software (e.g., MATLAB, C/C++) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the reliable design, implementation, and testing of space communication systems crucial for mission success.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with CCSDS standards in space communications projects?

Professionals working with CCSDS standards often encounter challenges such as interpreting and implementing complex technical documentation, ensuring compatibility between diverse hardware and software systems, and coordinating with international teams to meet strict interoperability requirements. Additionally, adapting to evolving standards and integrating them into legacy systems can be demanding. Strong problem-solving skills and clear communication with multidisciplinary teams are essential for overcoming these obstacles and ensuring mission success.

What are CCSDS and what do they do?

CCSDS stands for the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems. It is an international body formed to develop standards for data and information systems used in spaceflight. CCSDS creates protocols and recommendations to ensure that different space agencies can communicate and share data effectively. Their standards cover areas like data formatting, data transmission, and spacecraft-ground communications, helping to improve interoperability between space missions worldwide.

What is the difference between Ccsds vs Satellite Communications Technician?

AspectCcsdsSatellite Communications Technician
CertificationsTypically requires specialized training in space data standards and protocolsRequires satellite communication system certifications and technical training
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in aerospace, space agencies, or defense sectorsUsually in telecommunications companies, satellite service providers, or field service
Industry UsageUsed in space missions, satellite data handling, and space agency operationsUsed in satellite installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting

While both roles involve working with satellite technology, Ccsds specialists focus on space data standards and protocols used in space missions, whereas Satellite Communications Technicians handle the installation and maintenance of satellite communication systems in terrestrial settings. The roles overlap in technical knowledge but differ in application and environment.

Job description

Role:

A Satellite Database Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining databases that support satellite integration, operations, telemetry processing, mission planning, and analytics. This role requires expertise in handling large-scale telemetry and command data, including Mission Information Base (MIB) formats, which are essential for defining telemetry and command dictionaries.

Tasks and Techical Skills:

Mission Information Base (MIB) Expertise:

  • Experience in handling, processing, and managing MIB format files for satellite telemetry and command definitions.
  • Understanding of MIB database structures for storing telemetry parameters, command definitions, and limits.
  • Ability to parse, validate, and integrate MIB files into satellite operations software.

Telemetry & Command Data Handling:

  • Experience with real-time and historical telemetry data processing.
  • Knowledge of CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) standards for telemetry and command data.
  • Familiarity with telemetry data encoding, compression, and error handling.

Data Modeling & Architecture:

  • Strong knowledge of relational and non-relational database design for space systems.
  • Ability to optimize database performance for high-volume satellite telemetry and command data.

Big Data & Analytics:

  • Experience handling large telemetry datasets from satellites and ground stations.

Cloud & Infrastructure:

  • Experience with cloud-based database solutions (AWS RDS, Azure Cosmos DB, Google BigQuery).
  • Familiarity with containerized database deployment (Docker, Kubernetes).

    Programming & Scripting:

    • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and shell scripting for automation and data processing.
    • Experience with database APIs.

    Security & Compliance:

    • Knowledge of encryption, access control, and secure database best practices.

    Requirements:

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

    10+ years of relevant experience

Experience working with MIB telemetry and command databases for satellite mission operations is highly preferred.

Familiarity with satellite telemetry ground systems (e.g., mission control software, or flight software integration).

Previous relevant experience in Satellite Database for LEO/MEO constellation for communication missions

    Complementary skills/knowledge:

Understanding of the space environment, communication satellites, radio frequency (RF) equipment and the various solar cell & battery technologies

Ability to lead and/or mentor junior members of the engineering team

Problem-Solving & Analytical Thinking - Ability to troubleshoot and optimize MIB databases and telemetry processing systems.

Collaboration & Communication - Work with mission planners, aerospace engineers, and ground control teams to integrate database solutions.
