Job Description
The Department of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a dynamic, academically oriented, fellowship trained, surgeon to lead the UAB Division of Surgical Oncology. The successful candidate will lead an active, collaborative clinical, teaching and research program consisting of 13 surgical oncology faculty.
The Department of Surgery is comprised of over 150 faculty and over 400 fellows, residents and staff, and has 9 Divisions including Surgical Oncology. The clinical programs in the Department are world leaders in their field and are housed at the University Hospital which is the 3rd largest public hospital in the US. The Department has over 13 million dollars in research funding annually including 3 NIH training grants: a NIH/NCI T32 Surgical Oncology grant, a NIH/NIDDK T35 grant, and a NIH/NCI R25 oncology grant. The education programs consist of 5 residencies and 10 fellowships.
The Division Director of Surgical Oncology will oversee and manage the division finances, personnel, and faculty. The incumbent will serve on the Departmental Leadership Council which is the governing body of the Department of Surgery. They will report to Herbert Chen, MD, who came to UAB as Chair in 2015. This position will be tenure track at the title/rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center (O'Neal CCC) at UAB - The O'Neal CCC at UAB is one of the initial comprehensive cancer centers established in 1972. It remains one of only two NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the Deep South and the only one in a three-state area that includes Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The O'Neal CCC at UAB has four research programs, eleven shared facilities, and a scientific membership of over 400 core members. A vast majority of UAB-based key personnel on this application are affiliated with the O'Neal CCC. Its members come from 39 departments in 8 UAB schools. More than 175,000 square feet of space in eight buildings are dedicated to cancer research. Direct annual extramural funding in the O'Neal CCC at UAB approaches $140 million and the center's Cancer Center Core Support Grant (CCSG) has been renewed through 2027 with $27.5 million from the National Cancer Institute. Its long-term strengths include its programs in Experimental Therapeutics, Neurooncology, Cancer Biology & Immunology, and Cancer Control and Population Science. In addition, there is a strong commitment to research on cancer health disparities. The O'Neal CCC at UAB treats approximately 20,000 patients annually with over 9,000 new cancer patients each year and has an extensive effort focused on delivering cancer care and conducting research in underserved populations.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System, is the only four-year, public university in the state's largest metropolitan area.
