Job description


"This position uses expert knowledge in the operation of the transmission system to meet daily supply, transportation and delivery requirements in a safe, efficient and reliable manner under fluctuating conditions. "
Responsibilities
Uses and shares expert knowledge in monitoring and operating the pipeline system to meet customer's gas flow requirements while adhering to required contract, tariff and regulatory requirements. Uses Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA), to monitor pressures, temperatures, volumes and gas quality and adjust compression and valves to ensure safe and efficient operations of pipeline facilities. Monitors cathodic protection systems, communications systems and computer systems. Monitors the operations of the Common Facility, which is operated by Mojave Pipeline Operating Company but majority owned by Kern River. Helps define operating strategies, practices and processes. ?Defines practices regarding initial emergency response coordination and control. Notifies district managers, assistant district managers or field technical staff of alarms or problems needing repair or calibration and indicates what priority should be put on the repair work taking into account how critical the station is in the overall operation of the pipeline. Coordinates scheduled maintenance and unscheduled service outages with field operations, interconnecting operations, and nominations personnel. Uses pipeline maps, schematics, and alignment sheets to determine location and configuration of pipeline facilities. Communicates with customers, interconnecting pipelines, gas plants, power plants, Mojave Gas Control, field personnel, engineering, marketing services and management concerning scheduled volumes, system capacity, gas flows, pressures, gas quality, emergency conditions and customer relations. Provides recommendations regarding these communication opportunities. Monitors daily electronic custody transfer measurement data and customer imbalance information. Works with marketing and customers to minimize imbalances. Responds to data requests from measurement, engineering and management by supplying requested data, performing required data analysis and recommending follow-up actions. Produces computer-generated daily reports which provide operating data to management and marketing services personnel to assist them in determining capacity constraints on the system and in making calculations and decisions required for company operations. Makes recommendations based on this information. Completes special projects as required. Trains and/or assists other gas controllers as needed. Consults with management as needed.
Qualifications
An associate's degree in technical discipline, e.g., electronics and/or equivalent experience. Typically, three years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess an associate's degree. Five+ years' gas control experience or related gas industry experience. Hands-on knowledge of mechanical systems. Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts. Ability to analyze data, make independent decisions and adapt to rapidly changing conditions. Proficiency in use of spreadsheet, word processing and e-mail computer applications with an emphasis on SCADA systems. Good math skills. Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to train others regarding gas control functions and duties.
