What Is Caterpillar Ventures…

Caterpillar Ventures is charged with identifying investment opportunities that deliver innovation for Caterpillar’s current and future growth. The Director is a key member of the Caterpillar Ventures team, representing Caterpillar and working closely with the Executive Leadership, Corporate Development, and Legal to successfully execute investment opportunities with a focus on emerging technologies and services. This role reports to the Head of Ventures.

What You Will Do
  • Serves as a leader on the Caterpillar Ventures team, responsible for strategy, assessment, and evaluation of early-stage and growth investment opportunities that are in line with the organization’s long-range goals. Coordinates with internal stakeholders and business units to ensure that deals represent interests across the Caterpillar enterprise. Assists in the identification, evaluation, structuring of investments, working closely with Caterpillar Legal and Corporate Development.
  • Builds business cases and strategies to value, screen, and justify investments. Ability to develop and serve as a credible and positive champion for ideas, strategies, business cases, and people.
  • Develops deal flow, identifies verticals for growth in partnership with business leaders. Selects companies for investment, leads diligence and investments, builds value for portfolio companies and Caterpillar. Tracks performance, establishes follow-on investment strategies, and recommends when to exit investments when appropriate.
  • Manages, inspires, develops, and mentors a team of junior investment professionals. Leads the team to think creatively and progressively about investments and growth opportunities.
  • Partner with business leaders before, during and after transactions, to ensure the deals make strategic sense, fit with the forward-looking business plans, and are integrated smoothly and fully optimized.
  • Actively provide an “outside-in” perspective and recommendations to executive leadership on strategic priorities based on competitive and consumer intelligence
  • Stays current and applies an in-depth understanding of emerging technologies and industries to help identify growth drivers, new product concepts, and gaps in existing capabilities.
  • Support portfolio companies, serving on boards as required.
What You Have
  • Strategic Thinking: Knowledge of the importance of “big picture” thinking and planning; ability to apply organizational acumen and competitiveness to identify and maintain focus on key success factors for the organization.
  • Due Diligence Investigation: Knowledge of objectives, principles, approaches and processes of due diligence; ability to perform due diligence tasks to meet business goals.
  • Portfolio Management: Knowledge of investment portfolios; ability to utilize relevant tools and techniques in managing clients’ securities investments.
  • Venture Capital: Knowledge of the concepts, principles and operations of Venture Capital (VC); ability to perform investment duties associated with Venture Capital projects.
Top Candidates Will Have
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience in Corporate Venture Capital, Venture Capital, Private Equity, or M&A
  • Experience in leading teams to execute all aspects of transactions including early- stage sourcing of deal flow to direct experience in venture capital negotiation, execution, and portfolio management
  • An MBA is preferred but not required
  • Forward-thinking, on the cutting edge of what is coming next in technology
  • Relationships within the venture capital ecosystem. Deep knowledge, experience and relationships with technology companies is a plus.
  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal). Ability to effectively communicate complex concepts and ideas to an executive leadership team.
  • Capacity to operate at both a strategic and executional level, with a roll-up-your-sleeves mentality working alongside your team to deliver against the objectives
  • Comfortable performing, understanding, and applying financial models
  • Proven leadership skills engaging a diverse and geographically dispersed team
  • Experience managing multiple projects in complex environments
  • Detail-oriented, especially with regards to due diligence
  • Possesses both critical and creative thinking skills
  • Must be willing to travel for up to 50% of their time
Summary Pay Range

$169,320.00 – $253,920.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
