What is a casting call?

Casting calls are announcements or invitations for actors, models, or performers to audition for specific roles in film, television, theater, or other productions. They provide details about the project, the type of talent needed, audition dates, and submission requirements. Casting calls can be open to the public or limited to professionals and are a key step in finding the right people for a production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a casting director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Casting Director, you need a keen eye for talent, deep knowledge of acting and storytelling, and experience in film, television, or theater casting, often supported by a degree in film, theater, or a related field. Familiarity with casting software like Cast It, Breakdown Services, and knowledge of union regulations (e.g., SAG-AFTRA) are essential. Excellent communication, negotiation, and networking skills help you build relationships with agents, actors, and production teams. These skills ensure the right talent is selected efficiently, contributing to the overall success and authenticity of a production.

What are some common challenges actors face during the casting call process and how can they prepare effectively?

Actors often find casting calls challenging due to the high level of competition and the pressure to stand out in a short audition. Preparing thoroughly by researching the production, memorizing lines, and practicing in front of others can help ease nerves and improve performance. It's also important to be adaptable, as casting directors may ask for changes in delivery or impromptu readings. Building resilience to handle rejection and maintaining professionalism throughout the process will also set candidates apart.

What is the difference between Casting Call vs Casting Director?

AspectCasting CallCasting Director
RoleAudition announcement inviting performers to audition for a roleProfessional responsible for selecting and hiring performers for productions
Required CredentialsNone specific; open to all performersExperience in casting, industry knowledge, often industry contacts
Work EnvironmentEvent or online platform where auditions are announcedOffice, studio, or production set
Industry UsageUsed by producers, casting agencies, or directors to gather talentUsed by production companies and directors to find suitable performers

In summary, a Casting Call is an announcement inviting performers to audition, while a Casting Director is a professional who manages the casting process and selects talent. Both are essential in the casting industry but serve different functions.

Can I go to a casting call with no experience?

Casting calls are open to individuals of various experience levels, and many do not require prior experience. For some roles, basic acting skills, a good attitude, and the ability to follow directions are sufficient; training or workshops can help improve your chances. It is common for newcomers to attend casting calls to gain exposure and experience in the industry.

Position Overview

The Casting Assistant will support the daily casting, scheduling, administrative, and event-coordination needs of our company.

This position requires someone who can manage multiple events simultaneously, communicate professionally with actors and clients, and remain calm when an event requires an urgent casting replacement or last-minute adjustment.

This is not simply a general office position. Applicants should have experience or strong working knowledge in casting, live entertainment, theater, event planning, talent coordination, production, or a closely related field.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Organize auditions and performer interviews
  • Prepare and distribute casting calls
  • Review actor and performer submissions
  • Contact actors regarding availability and qualifications
  • Schedule performers for events
  • Prepare call times, event instructions, addresses, and directions
  • Confirm that performers received and understood their instructions
  • Contact clients to verify event details
  • Coordinate events with corporate and private event planners
  • Maintain accurate performer and event records
  • Update website information and company databases
  • Post casting and promotional content on social media
  • Track open roles and casting deadlines
  • Follow up with performers who have not confirmed
  • Assist with last-minute performer replacements
  • Communicate changes to clients, performers, sales representatives, and production staff
  • Maintain organized documentation for multiple events in different cities

Required Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Experience in casting, theater, live entertainment, event planning, talent coordination, production, or a related field
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong professional phone etiquette
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to manage several events and deadlines simultaneously
  • Good judgment under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Professionalism when communicating with actors, clients, and event planners
  • The ability to follow instructions and complete assignments without constant supervision
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Google Workspace, email, calendars, and online business systems
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar website platforms
  • Knowledge of social-media posting and promotion
  • General knowledge of television, movie, historical, theatrical, and popular entertainment characters
  • An understanding of the relationship between sales, casting, creative development, and event production

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to applicants with experience in:

  • Casting actors or entertainers
  • Theater or film production
  • Talent agencies
  • Corporate-event planning
  • Entertainment booking
  • Preparing actor call sheets
  • Working with performers in multiple cities
  • Coordinating costumes, rehearsals, travel, or event logistics
  • Handling last-minute event or talent emergencies

Schedule and Availability

This is a full-time, in-office position in Austin, Texas. It is NOT remote or hybrid.

Applicants must be able to report reliably to the Austin office for all scheduled shifts.

Because live events may occasionally involve last-minute changes, applicants should be available for reasonable evening or weekend communication when an urgent casting issue affects an upcoming event.

Who Will Succeed in This Position

The strongest candidate will be:

  • Dependable and punctual
  • Loyal and committed
  • Calm during stressful situations
  • Comfortable making professional telephone calls
  • Persistent with performer confirmations and follow-up
  • Honest about mistakes or incomplete assignments
  • Capable of prioritizing urgent issues
  • Highly organized
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Interested in building a long-term relationship with the company

To be considered, applicants must submit:

  1. A current resume
  2. A cover letter
  3. The city in which they currently reside
  4. A description of their relevant casting, entertainment, theater, production, or event-planning experience
  5. An explanation of why they would be a strong fit for Characters for Hire

Begin your cover letter with the words:

Live Entertainment Operations

Applications submitted without a cover letter or without the requested phrase may not be reviewed.

Please do not call the company regarding this position.
