Job Title: Ground Maintenance Worker (Carpentry & Painting)
Location: Newport News, VA
Employment Type: Full-Time (W2)
GovFirst is seeking a skilled Ground Maintenance Worker (Carpentry & Painting) to support facility maintenance operations in the Newport News, VA area. This position is responsible for performing a combination of carpentry, painting, building maintenance, repair, and general facility support tasks. The ideal candidate will have experience in building maintenance, painting, demolition, and the use of hand and power tools.
Responsibilities:
  • Assemble and fasten materials to construct or repair frameworks, cabinets, doors, floors, and other building fixtures.
  • Build, repair, and install wooden structures and components using woodworking machinery, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Install and repair windows, frames, flooring, trim, and hardware.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders to perform work at elevated heights.
  • Remove and replace damaged building components and structures.
  • Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, primers, sealers, and other finishes to buildings, structures, and equipment.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting through sanding, stripping, scraping, caulking, patching, and masking.
  • Mix and match paint, stain, and finish materials to achieve desired colors and finishes.
  • Remove fixtures and hardware prior to painting and reinstall as needed.
  • Perform demolition and surface preparation activities.
  • Calculate material requirements and estimate quantities needed for assigned work orders.
  • Read work orders, plans, and instructions to determine project requirements.
  • Conduct inspections and evaluate completed work to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor and/or USF Senior Project Manager.

Requirements
Required Skills & Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in building maintenance, painting, carpentry, demolition, or related trades.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance techniques, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to perform carpentry, painting, repair, and general maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and evaluate workmanship and quality.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Required Education & Credentials:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Coursework in carpentry, shop, mechanical drawing, or general mathematics is preferred.
Required Work Authorization:
  • US Citizenship.
Required Licensing & Background Check:
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License in good standing required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) required.
  • Pre-employment drug screening required.
