What is a carpenter assistant?

Carpenter Assistants are entry-level workers who help carpenters with tasks such as measuring materials, cutting wood, carrying supplies, and cleaning up job sites. They support skilled carpenters in the construction, repair, and installation of building frameworks and structures. Carpenter Assistants may also operate basic tools and equipment under supervision and learn the trade through hands-on experience. This role is ideal for individuals interested in gaining practical skills in carpentry and potentially advancing to a full carpenter position.

What does a carpenter assistant do?

Carpenter assistants, also known as carpenter helpers, provide support to the primary carpenters on a project. In this role, you may review the blueprints and plans for the finished product with the lead carpenters, then you perform tasks under their supervision. Your job duties may include measuring lengths, cutting wood, and holding beams while they are secured into place. Carpenter assistants typically do not work on the main parts of the project, such as communicating with the client and establishing the start of the structure. Many carpenter assistants are apprentices who are training to become full-time carpenters, but some assistants are hired in temporary roles for companies that need extra people on staff for larger projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a carpenter assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Carpenter Assistant, you need basic carpentry knowledge, manual dexterity, and familiarity with construction safety protocols, often obtained through on-the-job training or vocational courses. Experience using hand tools, power tools, and equipment like saws and drills is essential, and OSHA safety certification is often preferred. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to follow instructions make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.

Job description

Sims Exteriors & Remodeling is looking for a Carpenter who has already developed a solid foundation in residential construction but wants the opportunity to continue learning and becoming a more complete craftsman.

This is not an entry-level labor position, but we also aren't looking for someone who believes they already know everything.

The ideal candidate has enough experience to be productive and valuable on a jobsite today while having the desire and humility to continue learning the remodeling trade from experienced carpenters and project leaders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist Lead Carpenters and Project Managers with residential remodeling projects.
  • Perform demolition, framing, blocking, and general carpentry.
  • Install windows and exterior doors.
  • Perform interior and exterior trim work.
  • Install cabinets, millwork, base, casing, and other finish components as experience allows.
  • Assist with siding, soffit, fascia, and exterior remodeling work when needed.
  • Identify construction problems and communicate them to the Lead Carpenter or Project Manager.
  • Read plans, measurements, and project documentation.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized jobsites.
  • Protect customers' homes and property throughout construction.
  • Properly maintain tools and equipment.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while understanding when to ask questions.
  • Develop additional skills through hands-on training and mentorship.
  • Represent Sims professionally with homeowners, coworkers, subcontractors, and suppliers.

Ideal Experience & Skills

We are looking for someone with approximately 2โ€“5+ years of residential construction or remodeling experience, although demonstrated ability is more important than a specific number of years.

Candidates should have:

  • A good working knowledge of basic residential construction.
  • Basic to intermediate framing and finish-carpentry skills.
  • Experience using common construction and woodworking tools.
  • Ability to accurately measure, cut, and install materials.
  • An understanding of how the different stages and trades of a remodeling project work together.
  • Ability to take direction and then independently complete assigned work.
  • A desire to become a more skilled and well-rounded carpenter.
  • Strong problem-solving ability.
  • Valid driver's license and dependable transportation.

The Person We're Looking For

We want someone who views carpentry as a trade and craft, not simply a job.

The right person should want to learn why something is done correctly, not just how to complete the immediate task. Over time, we want this person developing the knowledge and judgment necessary to take on increasingly complex work and greater responsibility.

Just as importantly, we are looking for someone whose character aligns with our core values:

Diligence โ€“ Consistently putting forth the effort required to do the job correctly.

Reliability โ€“ Showing up when expected and doing what you say you will do.

Industriousness โ€“ Thinking ahead, staying productive, and looking for the next thing that needs to be accomplished.

Conscientiousness โ€“ Caring about details, accuracy, cleanliness, and the finished product.

Respect โ€“ Treating customers, coworkers, subcontractors, and their property professionally.

For the right person, this is an opportunity to build on an existing foundation, learn from experienced professionals, and continue developing into a highly skilled carpenter within Sims Exteriors & Remodeling.
