What is a carpenter assistant?

Carpenter Assistants are entry-level workers who help carpenters with tasks such as measuring materials, cutting wood, carrying supplies, and cleaning up job sites. They support skilled carpenters in the construction, repair, and installation of building frameworks and structures. Carpenter Assistants may also operate basic tools and equipment under supervision and learn the trade through hands-on experience. This role is ideal for individuals interested in gaining practical skills in carpentry and potentially advancing to a full carpenter position.

What does a carpenter assistant do?

Carpenter assistants, also known as carpenter helpers, provide support to the primary carpenters on a project. In this role, you may review the blueprints and plans for the finished product with the lead carpenters, then you perform tasks under their supervision. Your job duties may include measuring lengths, cutting wood, and holding beams while they are secured into place. Carpenter assistants typically do not work on the main parts of the project, such as communicating with the client and establishing the start of the structure. Many carpenter assistants are apprentices who are training to become full-time carpenters, but some assistants are hired in temporary roles for companies that need extra people on staff for larger projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a carpenter assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Carpenter Assistant, you need basic carpentry knowledge, manual dexterity, and familiarity with construction safety protocols, often obtained through on-the-job training or vocational courses. Experience using hand tools, power tools, and equipment like saws and drills is essential, and OSHA safety certification is often preferred. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to follow instructions make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.

A Day in the Life of a Carpenter at SERVPRO

No two days are exactly the same at SERVPRO, and that's one of the things our team enjoys most about the work.
As a Carpenter on our Reconstruction team, you will help rebuild homes and businesses following fire, water, storm, and other property damage events. One day you may be hanging drywall and installing trim in a residential home, while the next day you could be framing walls, installing flooring, painting, or completing repairs on a commercial property.
You'll work closely with Project Managers, teammates, customers, and subcontractors to help bring damaged properties back to preloss condition. Attention to detail, quality workmanship, and professionalism are critical, as many of our customers are experiencing a stressful situation and are relying on us to restore their property.
We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys working with their hands, and wants to be part of a team that helps people get back to normal after a loss.
Primary Responsibilities
  •  Perform demolition and reconstruction work related to restoration projects
  •  Complete framing, drywall installation and finishing, trim work, flooring, cabinetry, painting, and other carpentry tasks

  •  Maintain a clean and safe job site
  •  Communicate project progress and concerns to management
  •  Ensure work is completed according to company standards and customer expectations
  •  Operate hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment safely
  •  Load, unload, and transport materials to and from job sites
  •  Assist with punch-list items and final project completion
  •  Follow all company safety policies and procedures
  •  Represent SERVPRO professionally when interacting with customers, vendors, and subcontractors
Required Skills & Experience
  •  Minimum 3 years of carpentry or construction experience preferred
  •  Experience with framing, drywall, trim, painting, flooring, cabinetry, and general construction repairs
  •  Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  •  Strong attention to detail and workmanship
  •  Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic construction math
  •  Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  •  Valid driver's license and insurable driving record required
  •  Ability to successfully pass a background check
Physical Requirements
  •  Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and lift throughout the workday
  •  Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds regularly
  •  Ability to work on ladders, roofs, and elevated surfaces
  •  Ability to work in varying weather conditions and construction environments
  •  Ability to safely operate construction tools and equipment
Work Environment
  •  Full-time position supporting reconstruction projects throughout Rock County and surrounding areas
  •  Typical schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
  •  Occasional overtime may be required based on project demands
  •  Work performed in residential, commercial, and construction environments
  •  Frequent travel between job sites throughout the workday
Important Information
  • Health insurance is not currently offered
  •  401(k) with company match available after eligibility requirements are met
  •  Company vehicle may be available for qualified employees based on position and responsibilities
  •  Reliability, attendance, safety, and quality workmanship are critical to success in this role
What We're Looking For
  •  Someone who takes pride in producing quality work
  •  Strong carpentry and construction skills
  •  Dependable attendance and punctuality
  •  A positive attitude and strong work ethic
  •  Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  •  Professional communication with customers and coworkers
  •  Commitment to safety and doing the job right the first time
