Duties typically include monitoring surveillance systems, conducting patrols, enforcing security protocols, and sometimes escorting high-value shipments. These guards may work for private security firms or as part of a ship's crew. The job often requires training in maritime security, firearms handling, and emergency response. Depending on the route, guards might also coordinate with naval forces or port authorities to ensure safe passage.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a cargo ship security guard?

A Cargo Ship Security Guard should have a solid understanding of maritime security protocols, basic first aid, and situational awareness, often backed by a high school diploma and security training certification such as STCW or ISPS Code. Familiarity with surveillance systems, communication devices, and incident reporting tools is typically required. Strong observational skills, a calm demeanor under pressure, and effective teamwork and communication abilities are essential soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies are vital for ensuring crew safety, preventing unauthorized access, and handling emergencies efficiently in demanding maritime environments.

Cargo Ship Security Guards often work long, rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, and may be at sea for several weeks at a time. The role involves patrolling the vessel, monitoring access points, and responding to security incidents in close coordination with the ship's crew. Working in varying weather conditions and spending extended periods away from home are common, requiring adaptability and resilience. Teamwork is an integral part of the job, as guards must constantly communicate with officers and other staff to address potential risks and ensure overall ship safety.
