What You'll Do
As an Exercise Physiologist, you will report to the Medical Director. The Exercise Physiologist is responsible for implementing the exercise component of the Traditional Cardiac Rehabilitation program, as well as Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET). This role emphasizes patient safety, effective use of exercise equipment, and proper form in a clinical fitness setting. The Exercise Physiologist supports patients through critical phases of recovery, ensuring a safe and encouraging environment. They monitor patient response to exercise interventions and collaborate closely with Registered Nurses and Respiratory Therapists as part of a multidisciplinary team. This role contributes to the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.
Exercise Physiologist Job Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate, supervise, and deliver exercise programs for Cardiac, Pulmonary, and Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET) rehabilitation patients in accordance with established clinical guidelines.
  • Conduct patient assessments, including body composition, BMI, and anthropometric measurements, to support individualized treatment planning.
  • Develop, implement, and modify personalized exercise prescriptions based on ACSM standards and clinical reassessments.
  • Monitor patient progress, document exercise sessions, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Educate patients on exercise safety, proper technique, equipment use, disease management, and long-term wellness strategies.
  • Provide individualized coaching and counseling to promote adherence, engagement, and patient satisfaction.
  • Assist with Pulmonary Rehabilitation and SET program operations as needed.
  • Maintain exercise equipment safety, cleanliness, functionality, and compliance with maintenance procedures.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies, changes in patient condition, and abnormal cardiac rhythms; participate in mock code training and emergency response activities.
  • Support program growth through patient outreach, community education, and promotion of rehabilitation services to healthcare providers and potential participants.
  • Model healthy lifestyle behaviors and uphold the principles and standards of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, infection prevention practices, and workplace safety standards.
  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, CPR/BCLS credentials, continuing education, and competency validations.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, staff development activities, quality improvement initiatives, and other organizational responsibilities.
What You Bring
As an Exercise Physiologist, this position requires expertise in exercise prescription, program development, and the safe progression of exercise plans tailored to individual patient needs. The role demands proficiency in the setup, operation, and maintenance of exercise equipment, as well as a strong understanding of EKG rhythms and the physiological responses to exercise. Candidates must be able to effectively demonstrate and teach proper exercise techniques, safety protocols, and healthy lifestyle practices. Strong interpersonal, communication, and motivational coaching skills are essential to foster a compassionate, patient-centered environment and support positive patient outcomes. The position also requires proficiency in documentation and electronic health record systems, confidence in public speaking and group education, and the ability to apply adult learning principles when leading patient education sessions. A commitment to collaborative, team-based care and providing emotional support throughout the patient recovery process is essential.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology required.
  • Two years of Cardiac or Pulmonary rehabilitation experience preferred.
  • Clinical certification within one year of employment (if not currently certified) in American College of Sports Medicine as either a Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) or Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) and/or American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation as a Certified Cardiac rehabilitation Professional (AACVPR-CCRP)
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, basic anatomy, and physiology.
  • Current certification in American Heart Association BCLS (CPR) required.
  • Current certification in American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred. Will need to obtain within 90 days of employment if not currently ACLS certified.
