What is carbon science?

Carbon science is the study of carbon-based materials, their properties, and their applications across various industries. Professionals in this field research and develop new materials like graphene, carbon nanotubes, and advanced composites, which are used in electronics, energy storage, aerospace, and environmental applications. They often work in laboratories, conduct experiments, and collaborate with engineers to create innovative solutions for real-world problems. Carbon scientists also play a key role in advancing sustainable technologies, such as carbon capture and storage, to address climate change.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in carbon science research, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in carbon science often encounter challenges such as staying current with rapidly evolving research, accessing advanced laboratory equipment, and collaborating across interdisciplinary teams. These challenges can be addressed by participating in regular professional development, seeking out collaborative research opportunities, and leveraging institutional partnerships for shared resources. Effective communication and project management skills are also essential for navigating complex projects and ensuring successful outcomes in carbon science roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a carbon scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Carbon Scientist, you need a solid background in chemistry, materials science, or environmental science, often with an advanced degree such as a master's or Ph.D. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, analytical techniques (like spectroscopy and chromatography), and data analysis software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and presenting research findings. These skills and qualities are crucial for advancing carbon-related research, developing sustainable solutions, and contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.

What is the difference between Carbon Science vs Environmental Scientist?

AspectCarbon ScienceEnvironmental Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related fields; certifications in carbon managementBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related fields; often includes certifications in environmental assessment
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, environmental consulting firms, industry settings focused on carbon footprint reductionGovernment agencies, research institutions, consulting firms working on broader environmental issues
Industry UsagePrimarily in climate change mitigation, carbon accounting, and sustainability projectsInvolved in pollution control, conservation, policy development, and environmental impact assessments

While both roles focus on environmental issues, Carbon Science specializes in carbon management and climate change mitigation, whereas Environmental Scientists address a broader range of ecological and environmental concerns. The two careers often overlap but differ in scope and specific expertise areas.

Job description

Are you passionate about decarbonization and combating climate change? As Project Manager on Apple's Supplier Carbon Solutions Team, you will manage and drive decarbonization of Apple’s product manufacturing at scale through the supply chain.
In this role you will be part of a nimble global Operations team and will be a key contributor to Apple's strategy for supply chain decarbonization, focusing on non-electricity related decarbonization opportunities.
You will partner closely with Apple Operations and Procurement leadership to further integrate decarbonization strategy into Apple's supply chain.
Description
You will work with cross-functional energy, environmental, operations, procurement, finance, government affairs and legal teams to champion, drive, and coordinate supplier decarbonization projects and programs at scale.
You will independently manage and deliver technical assistance to dozens of suppliers across diverse geographies, guiding them through decarbonization projects potentially spanning heat, energy efficiency, fluorinated gases, chemicals, carbon credits, and more. This includes developing and hosting trainings that are accessible and culturally resonant (sometimes in collaboration with external partners), with a focus on building lasting supplier capability so that decarbonization becomes embedded in how they operate.
You will execute or facilitate strategic deals (across multiple technologies and geographies) with Apple suppliers and solution providers, providing technical assistance and deal support.
You will manage, track and present supplier data and program performance metrics to leadership.
You will design and implement programs with Apple Operations and Procurement to further integrate decarbonization program implementation into Apple’s supply chain.
You will contribute to publicizing Apple’s progress in decarbonizing our supply chain, influencing other leading companies to pursue similar goals.
You will monitor and navigate the evolving landscape of carbon-related regulations, standards, and claim requirements, ensuring program designs meet eligibility criteria for recognition in Apple's public environmental claims, while proactively identifying and mitigating compliance, credibility, and reputational risks.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in engineering, project management, or management science with 3+ years of professional experience is a plus
You are passionate about scaling environmental solutions in the industrial and manufacturing sector.
You have exceptional verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to influence; you are able to communicate technical information in a concise way to a non-technical audience
You are curious; able to learn quickly and adapt in a new and complex sector
East Asia language (Mandarin, Japanese, Korean) skills are a plus.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in engineering, physics, environmental science, economics/business or other technical/scientific field
7+ years of relevant experience
You have extraordinary program and project management experience, able to run and organize multiple projects with competing priorities and different timescales
You have a broad understanding of various decarbonization technologies (such as heat, fluorinated gases, chemicals, carbon credits, etc.) including engineering, economic and policy factors.
