Reporting directly to the Director of Insurance and Risk Management, the Manager, will lead the Risk Management GL claim function. Responsibilities include effectively managing both the inhouse team and third party claims administrator to achieve optimal financial results; liaising with all external stakeholders including insurance carriers and outside counsel; accurately setting and monitoring the claim reserves; partnering with internal stakeholders to achieve risk management objectives; and proactively analyzing and monitoring best practices and new risk management initiatives to reduce claim severity and costs; and, as the Company stands up its captive insurance program, partnering with the captive manager to support the reporting, funding, and oversight of losses retained within the captive.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities:
  • Management of General Liability programs. Provide strategic guidance and oversee the third-party claims administrator as well as the inhouse team of professionals responsible for claims administration, litigation management and financial analysis.
  • Analysis of detailed loss information to proactively identify trends and optimize claim management.
  • Participates in the presentation of significant claims and developments to executive leadership twice annually for GL programs.
  • Conducts a review of the performance of third-party administrator(s) with respect to file reviews, best practice audits, service providers and claims action plans.
  • Serve as the Company's primary claims liaison to its captive insurer and captive manager, supporting the reporting, funding, and settlement of claims retained within the captive program as it is established and operationalized.
  • Oversee claims retained by the captive, ensuring the TPA correctly applies deductibles, retentions, and limits and that case reserves and loss data are accurate for the captive's reserving, funding, and Board reporting, in coordination with the captive manager and actuary.
  • Partner with the captive manager, actuaries, and auditors to set and monitor loss reserves for retained programs and support the presentation of captive claims results to the captive Board and executive leadership.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 10+ years combined experience including management of a corporate risk department and/or large insurance carrier with retail claims experience.
  • Strong foundation in claims adjustment and TPA management, litigation management and risk control as well as legal issues.
  • Retail industry experience in a large, multistate company is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Risk Management Information systems, database analytics, claims trends, methods for allocating risk management costs and setting of reserves for self-insured claims.
  • Proficiency in Windows office 365 (excel, Power point), LPMS, Via one or Riskonnect preferred.
  • Excellent communicator, strategic thinker, trainer, strong organizational skills and cross-functional collaborative team player.
  • Has in-depth knowledge in own discipline and basic knowledge of related disciplines.

  • Working knowledge of captive insurance structures, fronting and reinsurance arrangements, collateral and escrow funding, and captive claims reporting a plus.

This is a hybrid role. Tuesday through Thursday are in-office days at BJ's Club Support Center in Marlborough, MA and Monday and Friday are remote days.
In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ's Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is $103,000.00 - $131,500.00
