Position Summary / Scope of responsibility

The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics LLC (CAO) is one of the nation’s largest Orthopaedics practices, owned and operated by physicians, with over 60 locations across Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Winchester Orthopaedic Associates, a well‑established private practice which has been serving the community since 1973, is seeking an additional partner. We are currently seeking an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Foot & Ankle surgery. Winchester, Virginia, is located within the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. It is a growing community with outstanding public and private school systems, outdoor recreation, rich history and affordable housing. We are within one hour of Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest, and various local hiking, biking, and lake access points. Winchester is located about one hour from Dulles International Airport and 90 minutes from Washington, D.C.

Our main office is located less than one mile from Winchester Medical Center, a Level II trauma center affiliated with Valley Health System, which offers a broad spectrum of diagnostic, medical, surgical, and rehabilitative services.

Practice Overview:

• Real estate opportunities in conjunction with practice partnership.
• Hospital‑employed Orthopaedic Traumatologist allows orthopedists to grow their elective practice.
• Compensated Emergency Department Call
• Ancillaries include:
  • Physical & Occupational Therapy offices: Winchester, VA; Front Royal, VA; Ranson, WV
  • DME
  • Joint ownership in an MRI facility
  • Joint ownership in an Ambulatory Surgery Center

Areas of focus needed include:

• Outpatient Surgery (forefoot, midfoot, rearfoot, and ankle)
• Inpatient Surgery (infection control, trauma, etc.)
• Limb Salvage
• Wound care
• Trauma
• Sports medicine
• In‑office dispensing (DME, orthotics, and numerous other items)

We take a patient‑centered approach and are committed to the treatment of foot and ankle ailments with either conservative and/or surgical means. We strive to provide our patients with prompt, courteous, and caring services while providing the highest quality care possible.

The Foot and Ankle Surgeon diagnoses and provides treatment for various injuries and diseases within the bones, joints, and muscles of the foot and ankle.

Primary Responsibilities

• Comfortable with the surgical correction of ankle, rearfoot, and forefoot pathology.
• Diagnoses, treats, or prescribes treatment of the foot, ankle, and other related structures using medical histories, physical examinations, x‑rays, and laboratory test results.
• Performs foot, ankle, and related structure surgeries within the scope of practice.
• Consults with the inter‑professional team on the care of patients.
• Prescribes medications, corrective devices, physical therapy, or surgery; sets fractures.
• Administers medications and local anesthetics.
• Actively pursues and participates in research activities as well as mentoring residents and other medical staff in research endeavors.
• Records all diagnoses, treatments, and prescriptions.
• Refers patients to other physicians or specialists for consultation in an inter‑professional manner.
• Advises patients about treatments and foot‑care techniques to prevent future problems.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

The Foot and Ankle Surgeon reports directly to the Lead Physician at the assigned Practice and clinic. This role does not currently have direct reports.

Required Education and Experience

• Board Certified or Board Eligible Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon from an accredited training program.
• Licensure in the assigned practice state(s).
• BLS Certification required.
• 3‑year postgraduate training required.
• Board Qualified in Foot and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle.
• Must maintain CEU’s in pertinent clinical practice according to licensure requirements.
• Excellent knowledge of therapeutic and surgical treatments for the lower extremities.
• Experience and proficiency working with computers and electronic medical records.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to sit for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics when making necessary transfers and helping patients with exercises.
• Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting.
• Some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a standard work shift.
• Adequate hearing to perform duties in person and over telephone.
• Requires hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, medical equipment, fax machine, scanner, photocopier, and telephone.
• Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
• Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading materials from printed sources and computer screens.
• Requires exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
