Instructor – Industrial Machinery Technician (Contract)

The Machinists Institute, a 501c3 nonprofit was created by the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers District 751 to fill a vital role for training and apprenticeship programs for the community. MI provides world class training to current and future aerospace, automotive and manufacturing workers. The Institute focuses on providing living-wage career opportunities through cutting edge education and training.

We are seeking a skilled and passionate Industrial Machinery Technician to join our team as a contract instructor. This role is focused on delivering hands-on training experiences to apprentices and career training participants. The ideal candidate will bring extensive industry experience, technical knowledge, and a commitment to preparing the next generation of skilled workers.

Location: Seattle, WA and Vancouver, WAReports to: Regional Director of OperationsEssential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide hands-on instruction in diesel engines, marine engines, electrical theory, troubleshooting, electronics, and tool usage.
  • Develop and deliver engaging curriculum aligned with apprenticeship program requirements.
  • Support student learning by providing demonstrations, guided practice, and real-world problem-solving opportunities.
  • Maintain instructional equipment, tools, and lab environments to ensure safe and effective training conditions.
  • Use a Learning Management System (preferably CANVAS) to manage class materials, assignments, and student progress.
  • Mentor, coach, and guide apprentices to build both technical and professional workplace skills.
  • Collaborate with program leadership to ensure curriculum aligns with industry standards and employer needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years hands-on experience in an industrial or shop environment.
  • At least two (2) years of leadership experience in a supervisory, lead, or foreman role.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, marine engines, electronics, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience with tool usage, safety practices, and shop operations.
  • Experience in teaching, training, or mentoring students preferred; instructor training provided if needed.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (preferably CANVAS).
  • Understanding of apprenticeship programs, with preference for candidates who have completed or participated in one.
