JOB SUMMARY & KEY OBJECTIVES: The Hirzel Canning Company (HCC) CDL A Yard Truck Driver, also known as a Yard Jockey, is a critical team member responsible for safely and efficiently moving trailers within the facility grounds. This individual plays a key role in ensuring smooth trailer transitions between loading docks, staging areas, and parking locations. The Yard Truck Driver must have experience in operating both manual and automatic yard trucks and in properly connecting and disconnecting trailers. 

Communication with internal warehouse and transportation teams is essential to maintaining safe and timely operations.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Trailer Movement & Yard Coordination

  • Move trailers to and from loading docks, staging areas, and yard parking areas as directed
  • Communicate regularly with warehouse and transportation personnel to coordinate trailer movements
  • Perform thorough trailer inspections prior to movement, checking for safety issues or damage
  • Ensure trailers are correctly positioned and secured at dock doors or in designated yard spots

Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate yard trucks (manual and automatic transmissions)
  • Hook and unhook trailers using proper procedures and safety equipment. Perform pre- and post-shift inspections of yard truck and report any maintenance or safety concerns

Recordkeeping & Communication

  • Maintain accurate records of trailer locations, trailer numbers, and trailer movements as required
  • Communicate any delays, equipment issues, or safety concerns promptly to the Transportation Supervisor

  • Able to work Saturdays and Sundays when required (generally during pack season)
  • Compliance with all HCC policies and procedures

  • Willingness to adapt to change and support continuous improvement

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Reaching with hands and arms
  • Communication through speech, hearing, and in writing
  • Daily requirements:
    • Bending, twisting, turning, reaching below the knee, pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling, standing, walking, sitting
  • Lifting requirements: 
    • Will regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
    • Will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Experience operating yard trucks or similar equipment (manual and automatic)
  • Experience hooking/unhooking trailers and working in a yard or logistics environment
  • Experience in backing up and maneuvering trailers is required. 
  • Strong understanding of trailer safety procedures and yard protocols
  • Solid work history with dependable attendance and performance
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Forklift experience/certification is a plus
