Job Summary

The Canner I is responsible for shifting plant material into larger containers, including cans and boxes up to 24-inch size. This role supports nursery production by properly transplanting plants using established canning techniques while maintaining plant quality and ensuring plants are handled carefully throughout the process.

Canners typically work as part of a canning crew assigned to a canning machine or canning process and help maintain clean, organized, and safe nursery operations.

Essential Functions

  • Shift plant material into larger containers, including cans and boxes up to 24 inches.
  • Follow proper canning techniques for each plant variety to support healthy plant growth.
  • Identify plant material and ensure plants meet quality standards during the canning process.
  • Work as part of a canning crew assigned to a canning machine or canning process.
  • Utilize and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) and company equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of nursery grounds to ensure safe conditions for employees, customers, and vendors.
  • Ensure nursery stock is handled carefully, watered as needed, and kept free of weeds.
  • Place plants in designated areas after canning to support proper nursery organization and plant care.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist other nursery departments as needed.
  • Support general nursery operations and plant handling activities.
  • Duties are subject to change at any time per management’s discretion.

Experience & Other Requirements

Required

  • Ability to identify plant material and recognize plant quality standards.
  • Ability to follow direction and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to handle plants carefully and maintain plant quality during transplanting.
  • Ability to communicate with Crew Leaders and other nursery staff.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working in a nursery, landscape, or agricultural environment.
  • Experience working with canning equipment or transplanting plants.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed primarily outdoors in active nursery environments.

Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, active equipment and vehicle traffic, and exposure to dust, plant material, fertilizers, moisture, and seasonal allergens. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as applicable.

Physical requirements include:

  • Extensive walking throughout the nursery during the workday.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, turning, squatting, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Working on uneven surfaces including dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas.
  • Use of hands and fingers for grasping and moving plant material.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs independently (approximately 75% of the time).
  • Participating in team lifts up to 100 lbs (approximately 25% of the time).
