What is a camp counselor?

Camp counselors are individuals responsible for supervising and guiding campers during their stay at a camp. They plan and lead activities, ensure the safety and well-being of campers, and serve as role models and mentors. Camp counselors work in a variety of settings, including day camps, overnight camps, and specialty camps focused on sports, arts, or outdoor education. Their main goal is to create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment that helps campers build confidence, skills, and friendships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a camp counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Camp Counselor, you need leadership skills, basic first aid knowledge, and experience working with children, often supported by a high school diploma or higher. Familiarity with safety protocols, activity planning tools, and certifications like CPR/First Aid are typically required. Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving abilities help counselors engage campers and handle diverse situations. These skills are crucial for ensuring a safe, positive, and enriching camp experience for all participants.

What does a camp counselor do?

Camp counselors supervise and educate children and teens in day and overnight camping programs. They plan and lead activities based on the nature of the camp and their specialties. For example, a summer camp may include swimming lessons, and the camp counselor must be able to teach, supervise, and perform CPR during swim sessions. A drama camp may need a camp counselor to instruct young kids on acting techniques for a stage performance. Camp counselor duties may also include overnight supervision, food service, outdoor training, and basic first aid.

What are common challenges camp counselors face and how can they handle them?

Camp counselors often encounter challenges such as managing group dynamics, addressing homesickness among campers, and ensuring safety during activities. Effectively handling these situations requires strong communication skills, patience, and adaptability. Counselors can foster a positive environment by setting clear expectations, staying attentive to campers' needs, and working closely with co-counselors and supervisors to resolve issues quickly. Ongoing training and teamwork are key to successfully overcoming these challenges and ensuring a rewarding experience for both campers and staff.

Do you make money as a camp counselor?

Yes, camp counselors typically earn a salary or hourly wage, which varies depending on the camp, location, and experience. Most camp counselors are paid for their work during the summer season and may receive additional benefits such as room and board or training opportunities.

How hard is it to be a camp counselor?

Being a camp counselor can be physically and emotionally demanding, as it involves supervising children, organizing activities, and ensuring safety. The job requires strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to handle unexpected situations, often working long hours during the camp season.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY
The Sunrise Day Camp Counselor supports Sunrise Day Camp - Staten Island, for children ages 3 1/2 - 16, is the only dedicated full summer day camp in the world for children with cancer and their siblings.
It is a camp designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational and physical needs of these children while allowing them to enjoy the comforts and safety of their own homes at night.
Sunrise Day Camp offers a full, multi-week summer activity program plus year- round camp-like programs. These additional programs take place at our campgrounds and other locations that provide exclusive use of their facilities.
Best of all, Sunrise Day Camp is offered free of charge to all children being treated for cancer and their siblings on a non-sectarian basis. By raising the needed funds from outside sources instead of charging the parents, we can help to alleviate some of the costs, and the related stress, that parents incur caring for a sick child throughout the year.
ABOUT YOU
The Sunrise Day Camp Counselor is an individual aged 18 years and older to take part in a magical summer experience for our campers. We are looking for individuals who are mature, responsible, energetic, and excited to make a tremendous impact in the lives of our children. Sunrise Day Camp hires individuals as counselors, supervisors, and specialists. Our specialty areas include sports, art, music, drama, dance and many other areas! Our staff works with children between the ages of 3 1/2 and 16 for up to seven weeks. Staff positions commonly involve being with children for the full length of the camp day, from camper arrival at 8:30 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon. Because our camper population may have greater emotional and physical needs, and because staff stays in close proximity with the campers, the experience is demanding. It is critical that staff members are attentive to children, their individual needs and concerns, and demonstrate a willingness to do more than his or her share. Transportation can be provided.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Plan activities for groups of campers
  • Create weekly or daily schedules taking into account children's age, groups, and interests
  • Lead recreational and educational activities
  • Escort and oversee children
  • Educate campers through games and explorations
  • Set up and maintain equipment
  • Make sure all safety rules are followed
  • Ensure camping site is clean and that campers don't litter

OUR REQUIREMENTS
  • Familiarity with camps and various outdoor activities
  • Patient and reliable
  • Organizational and communication skills
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • A love for children

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina to follow strenuous activities)
  • High school diploma (preferred)
SALARY
  • Ranges from $1,350 to $2,850 for the summer.
The application process is extremely competitive, so you are encouraged to apply early!
This year's camp season runs from Monday, June 29th to Friday, August 14th, 2026. There are mandatory orientations/trainings throughout the month of June (dates TBD).
