Camera Architect information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Camera Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Camera Architect, you need a strong background in image processing, sensor technology, optics, and hardware-software integration, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Experience with technical tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, and camera simulation or calibration systems, as well as knowledge of industry standards, is vital. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective cross-functional communication are critical soft skills in this position. These capabilities ensure innovative camera solutions, robust system performance, and successful collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What are Camera Architects?

Camera Architects are professionals who design and develop the architecture of camera systems, typically for devices such as smartphones, tablets, or other digital imaging products. They are responsible for specifying the hardware and software components required to capture, process, and output images or videos at high quality. Their work involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize camera modules, image signal processors, sensors, and related algorithms. Camera Architects also stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in imaging technology to ensure their designs meet industry standards and consumer expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by Camera Architects when integrating new camera technologies into consumer devices?

Camera Architects often encounter challenges related to balancing image quality, power consumption, and hardware limitations when integrating new camera technologies into consumer devices. They must collaborate closely with hardware, software, and product teams to optimize camera modules within tight design constraints and ensure compatibility with other device components. Keeping up with rapid advancements in sensor technology and image processing algorithms also requires continuous learning and adaptation. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to address cross-functional issues and deliver high-performance camera solutions.

What is the difference between Camera Architect vs Camera Technician?

AspectCamera ArchitectCamera Technician
CredentialsRelevant degrees in film, media, or engineering; certifications in camera systemsTechnical training or certifications in camera equipment and maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesigning camera systems, planning setups, collaborating with production teamsInstalling, repairing, and maintaining camera equipment on set or in studios
Industry UsageUsed in pre-production, system design, and technical planningHands-on equipment operation and troubleshooting during filming

The main difference is that a Camera Architect focuses on designing and planning camera systems, while a Camera Technician handles the installation, maintenance, and operation of camera equipment during production. Both roles require technical knowledge, but the Architect is more involved in system design, whereas the Technician is hands-on with equipment.

Job description

Company:
Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
Job Area:
Operations Group, Operations Group > Product Management
General Summary:
We are seeking a senior product leader with deep expertise in camera systems, imaging pipelines, and video/AI SoCs. This leader will define and execute the multi-year product strategy that expands our IP camera presence globally and builds the foundation for a multi-tier, billion-dollar camera business.
As Director of Product Management, you will architect our IP camera SoC roadmap, steer global design wins with tier-1 OEMs, and align silicon, software, ecosystem partners, and GTM motions into one cohesive strategy. You will own the full product lifecycle-from concept to end-of-life-while driving differentiation across edge AI, ISP leadership, and system-level integration.
This position requires deep technical fluency, strong customer instincts, high cross-functional leadership, and the ability to translate market opportunities into successful silicon and platform offerings.
Previous IP camera SoC product management background would be a plus.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Roadmap Ownership
  • Lead and scale our global IP camera expansion strategy, defining the vision, TAM opportunity, and multi-year roadmap for camera SoCs.
  • Architect a multi-tier portfolio (high-end, mainstream, cost-optimized), balancing performance, AI capability, ISP requirements, and system cost targets.
  • Formulate long-term product, technology, and investment strategies-driving profitability, cost control, competitive advantage, and ecosystem relevance.
  • Drive internal alignment across silicon engineering, software, systems, ODM ecosystem partners, and GTM to ensure a single, coherent strategy.

Product Lifecycle Ownership
  • Direct product definition, development, and lifecycle management across multiple SoCs and platform variants.
  • Lead inbound product requirements, MRDs/PRDs, SKU strategy, competitive analysis, and product-level P&L considerations.
  • Oversee product modifications, upgrades, maintenance, and roadmap transitions across the entire lifecycle.

Camera / Video / AI Technical Leadership
  • Integrate edge AI, ISP excellence, sensor technology, video pipelines, connectivity, security, and system architecture into differentiated solutions.
  • Promote adoption of new technologies, industry-leading trends, and future-forward innovations in imaging, AI, and camera systems.

Customer & Market Leadership
  • Drive design wins with top global OEMs across enterprise, prosumer, consumer and industrial segments.
  • Engage directly with customers to understand requirements, win platforms, influence roadmaps, and guide long-term strategic partnerships.
  • Conduct complex market, competitive, and technology analyses to assess product marketability and opportunity prioritization.
  • Create compelling product positioning and technical marketing content; represent the company at key industry events.

Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Act as the central PM leader connecting engineering, operations, finance, marketing, quality, and sales throughout product development.
  • Ensure KPIs, performance targets, cost structures, and customer requirements are met by cross-functional teams.
  • Lead strategic decision-making with executives, engineering leaders, and program sponsors regarding performance, trade-offs, timelines, and customer commitments.

Business Execution
  • Build business cases, pricing strategy, feature trade-offs, and investment frameworks for new product initiatives.
  • Manage operating budgets, financial models, and multi-year forecasts in collaboration with finance and sales teams.
  • Negotiate agreements with third-party partners, ODMs, and technology vendors.

Location: San Diego, CA (Onsite required)
Travel: >25%
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Humanities, or related field.
• 8+ years of Product Management or related work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10+ years in Product Management, platform/SoC PM, or closely related technical leadership roles.
  • 15+ years working with embedded systems or camera/vision systems.
  • 10+ years working on imaging, camera ISP pipelines, or video encoding/processing.
  • 5+ years in edge/on-device AI, neural networks, or NPU-accelerated workloads.
  • Experience building and shipping silicon-based products at scale (camera SoCs preferred).
  • Experience with P&L, financial modeling, and operational cost control.
  • Experience negotiating 3rd-party supplier or ecosystem partnerships.
  • Experience influencing and operating in a large, matrixed organization.
  • Deep familiarity with IP cameras, image sensor technologies, or adjacent segments (mobile imaging, action cams, automotive, robotics, XR, etc.) is a strong plus.

What Success Looks Like
  • A clearly defined, multi-tier camera SoC roadmap that is globally competitive.
  • Strong design-win momentum across tier-1 OEMs and leading ODMs.
  • Integrated SW/HW/AI platform strategy aligned across engineering and GTM.
  • A durable foundation enabling the camera business to scale toward $1B+.
  • Recognition as the internal and external thought leader for camera SoCs.
