Job description

Working under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates light vehicles and equipment used by assigned unit. Incumbent will work individually or with a crew performing tasks related to highway maintenance work; paving, mowing , ditch cleaning, dig outs, removes brush/undergrowth from highway right of way, pavement patching , repair or replacement of guide markers, signs, fence, guardrail, clean culverts, traffic control, litter pick up, maintenance of roadside rests, graffiti removal, makes minor repairs to and clean signs and roadside markers. Operates and maintains various light equipment and performs general laboring tasks associated with the maintenance of the State Highway system.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER e xam. F or those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme-conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to -15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. The workweek is normally, 8 hrs. a day, 5 days, 5 days per week. The scheduling of the 5 days is at the discretion of the Region Management. The employee may be scheduled to work the night the night shift as needed to meet operational needs, with proper advance notice as per Bargaining Unit 12, Memorandum of Understanding. May be scheduled to work scheduled, and/or emergency overtime, due to storms, callback, special work projects, or to meet operational needs. May be required to work irregular shifts/alternate work schedules, including nights, holidays and weekends. May be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts and required to respond to emergency situations and calls. May be loaned to other cost centers.
Personal safety requirements include but are not limited to (as per Injury and Illness Prevention Program):
  • Appropriate footwear, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn.
  • Either long or short-sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
  • Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
  • Provided safety gear; hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirators, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the department (white coveralls for night work).
