JOB SUMMARY:

The Transcriber/Translator transcribes and translates materials including video and audio recordings, written materials, and conversation from Yup'ik to English and English to Yup'ik, facilitating understanding for a variety of audiences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Practice Yup'ik orthography (reading and writing).
  • Translate and transcribe material from conventions, meetings, presentations, and informal gatherings.
  • Attend conferences and meetings and act as official translator to mediate discussion.
  • Assist in making transcriptions into useable material.
  • Add information as directed to the Atlas website, including text, audio and videos.
  • Transcribe and translate Elder's texts and stories.
  • Convert written materials from one language into another, such as books, publications, or web pages.
  • Create a new text in the target language that reproduces the content and style of the original.
  • Edit and proofread text to accurately reflect language.
  • Use dictionaries and glossaries for reference.
  • Employ computer-assisted translation.
  • Facilitate communication for those with limited English proficiency.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships by working with groups, organizations, and partners.
  • Participate in Cultural Engagement Team Project.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to transcribe and translate Central Yup'ik and Cup'ik dialects to English.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form in both English and Yupik.
  • Strong knowledge in the structure and content of both English and Yup'ik language(s) including meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Working knowledge in translation and technical writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing as indicated by the needs of the reader/audience.
  • Ability to be an active listener.
  • Ability to find and identify essential information.
  • Ability to find ways to structure or classify multiple pieces of information.
  • Ability to reorganize information to get a better approach to problems or tasks.
  • Ability to actively learn new material or information to grasp its implications.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite Programs: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School or GED equivalent.
  • Associate's degree in related field preferred.
  • Two years of experience in transcribing and translating.
  • Ability to Speak Yupik is required; Fluent in Yupik reading and writing.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Calista has a fast-paced multi-tasking customer service oriented office environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes, and occasional overtime for immediate support or bid processing may be necessary.
