What is a CAD developer?

CAD Developers are professionals who design, develop, and customize software applications for Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems. They work with programming languages and CAD APIs to create tools that automate design processes, enhance functionality, or integrate CAD software with other systems. CAD Developers often collaborate with engineers, architects, and designers to improve productivity and tailor CAD tools to specific industry needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAD developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CAD Developer, you need a solid background in computer-aided design, programming (often in C++, Python, or similar languages), and a relevant degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA) and experience with APIs or plugin development are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set outstanding CAD Developers apart. These skills ensure the creation of robust, efficient design solutions and seamless collaboration on complex engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by CAD developers when collaborating with engineering teams?

CAD Developers often encounter challenges related to aligning software functionalities with the specific requirements of engineering teams. Communication gaps can arise when translating complex engineering needs into technical CAD features, especially in multidisciplinary projects. Additionally, keeping up with frequent design changes and ensuring software compatibility with various industry standards can require adaptability and proactive problem-solving. Building strong relationships and maintaining open channels of communication with engineers are essential for overcoming these obstacles and delivering effective CAD solutions.

What is the difference between Cad Developer vs CAD Designer?

AspectCad DeveloperCAD Designer
Required CredentialsProficiency in CAD software, programming skills, sometimes certifications in CAD or software developmentProficiency in CAD software, design skills, often a degree in design or engineering
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesDesign studios, engineering departments, architecture firms
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries requiring custom CAD tools, automation, or software solutionsUsed in architecture, product design, engineering for creating detailed drawings

While both roles work within the CAD industry, Cad Developers focus on creating and customizing CAD software and tools through programming, whereas CAD Designers primarily create detailed technical drawings and designs using CAD software. The roles often overlap in industries like engineering and manufacturing, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Is CAD developer still a good career?

A CAD developer role involves creating and modifying computer-aided design software or tools, often requiring knowledge of programming languages like C++ or Python. The demand for CAD developers remains steady in industries such as engineering, architecture, and manufacturing, especially as digital design and automation grow. Strong technical skills and familiarity with CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks enhance job prospects in this field.

Job description

Mid-Level / Senior CAD/GIS Designer โ€“ Civil & Coastal Infrastructure

Coastal Protection Engineering LLC (CPE), a multidisciplinary coastal consulting firm with a national presence and growing coastal engineering practice, is seeking an experienced CAD/GIS Designer to join our team. This mid- to senior-level role is suited for a well-rounded professional with demonstrated experience in Civil 3D, GIS, survey data processing, surface modeling, and civil or coastal infrastructure projects. Boca Raton, FL is preferred, but the position may also be based in Jacksonville, FL, Destin, FL, or Wilmington, North Carolina. Location is negotiable for the right candidate.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently with large survey and geospatial datasets, developing and comparing surfaces, calculating volume changes, preparing engineering drawings, and integrating CAD and GIS workflows. Candidates whose experience is primarily limited to architectural drafting, interior design, residential/commercial buildings, or other vertical construction are not a fit for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

โ€ข Develop and manage AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and models for coastal and civil infrastructure projects.

โ€ข Create, edit, and analyze TIN surfaces and digital terrain models using topographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, LiDAR, drone, and other survey datasets.

โ€ข Import, process, organize, and manage large XYZ point datasets and other geospatial information.

โ€ข Develop existing-condition, design, and post-construction surfaces and perform surface-to-surface comparisons, cut/fill analyses, and volumetric calculations.

โ€ข Calculate beach, dredging, excavation, fill, and other volume changes between surveys using Civil 3D surfaces and cross sections.

โ€ข Prepare plan views, profiles, cross sections, grading surfaces, alignments, quantities, and construction-ready drawing packages.

โ€ข Transform engineering concepts, sketches, markups, calculations, and design criteria into high-quality engineering drawings and construction documents.

โ€ข Prepare drawings for beach nourishment, dredging, navigation channels, coastal protection structures, marinas, seawalls, revetments, breakwaters, jetties, piers, bulkheads, and artificial reefs.

โ€ข Integrate CAD, GIS, survey, engineering, environmental, and aerial-imagery datasets into coordinated project deliverables.

โ€ข Develop GIS maps, spatial analyses, project databases, and publication-quality graphics using Esri ArcGIS Pro and/or similar GIS platforms.

โ€ข Perform QA/QC of CAD and GIS deliverables and maintain project CAD standards, coordinate systems, file structures, and data integrity.

โ€ข Work directly with engineers, coastal scientists, geologists, surveyors, and project managers throughout project development.

โ€ข Depending on experience and interest, participate in field surveys, construction observations, hydrographic/topographic data collection, and coastal monitoring activities.

Minimum Qualifications

โ€ข Mid-level to senior-level professional experience using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D in support of civil engineering, surveying, infrastructure, coastal, marine, or similar projects.

โ€ข Demonstrated experience creating and working with Civil 3D surfaces, including surface comparisons and cut/fill or volumetric calculations.

โ€ข Experience processing and managing large survey datasets, including XYZ point data.

โ€ข Strong working knowledge of GIS, preferably Esri ArcGIS Pro, and experience integrating CAD and GIS datasets.

โ€ข Ability to work with survey coordinate systems, aerial imagery, LiDAR, bathymetric/topographic data, and other geospatial information.

โ€ข Demonstrated ability to independently develop professional engineering drawings from engineer or scientist markups and design concepts.

โ€ข Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards, plan production, data management, and QA/QC.

โ€ข Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to manage multiple project assignments and deadlines in a consulting environment.

โ€ข Proficient English communication skills (oral and written) and ability to work legally in the United States for an indefinite period.

โ€ข Be able to legally work in the USA for an indefinite period of time.

Relevant technical experience and demonstrated capability are more important than a specific degree or number of years in the industry.

Additional Desired Qualifications

The following additional qualifications are not mandatory but will be viewed favorably:

โ€ข AI literacy and familiarity with AI-assisted CAD/GIS, scripting, data-processing, and technical-documentation workflows.

โ€ข Field experience with hydrographic/topographic surveys, beach profiles, RTK-GPS/GNSS, drone surveys, coastal monitoring, or construction observation. A candidate combining strong CAD/GIS skills with field experience would be especially valuable.

โ€ข Experience with QGIS, Global Mapper, or other GIS/geospatial software.

โ€ข Experience with structural detailing of reinforced concrete, structural steel, timber, seawalls, bulkheads, piers, and related marine structures.

โ€ข Experience with Python, MATLAB, AutoLISP, AI Coding agents or other scripting/automation tools used for CAD/GIS and data-processing workflows.
