What is a CAD detailer?

A CAD detailer is responsible for using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to produce detailed drawings for steel fabricators, steel erectors, and other clients. As part of your job duties, you develop thorough plans that include drawings, blueprints, and other design documents. These documents are then used by fabricators and builders in their construction process. In this career, you will often work with other construction professionals like architects, building engineers, and general contractors. Qualifications include spatial, mathematics, and communication skills, along with industry experience.

How does a CAD detailer typically collaborate with engineers and architects on a project?

As a CAD Detailer, you will work closely with both engineers and architects to translate their designs and specifications into detailed technical drawings. Collaboration often involves attending project meetings, reviewing design changes, and clarifying technical requirements to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards. Effective communication is key, as you'll need to incorporate feedback and revisions quickly while maintaining the integrity of the design. This teamwork ensures that all project stakeholders are aligned and that drawings reflect the latest updates and requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAD detailer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CAD Detailer, you need strong technical drawing abilities, attention to detail, and proficiency in drafting standards, usually supported by an associate degree or relevant certification. Mastery of CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks, along with knowledge of industry-specific codes, is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help you collaborate effectively with engineers and architects. These skills ensure the production of accurate, high-quality technical drawings that are essential for successful project execution.

What is the difference between Cad Detailer vs CAD Technician?

AspectCad DetailerCAD Technician
CredentialsOften requires a diploma or certification in CAD or draftingTypically requires an associate's degree or certification in CAD or related field
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, construction companies, architectural officesEngineering firms, architectural firms, manufacturing companies
Job FocusCreating detailed drawings for construction or manufacturingDeveloping and modifying technical drawings and plans
Industry UsageCommonly used in construction, architecture, and manufacturingWidely used across engineering, architecture, and product design

Both Cad Detailers and CAD Technicians work with CAD software to produce technical drawings. However, Cad Detailers focus more on detailed construction or manufacturing drawings, while CAD Technicians often handle a broader range of technical plans and modifications. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Is a CAD detailer still a good career?

A CAD detailer is a skilled professional who creates detailed technical drawings using CAD software, often in construction, manufacturing, or engineering industries. The demand for CAD detailers remains steady due to ongoing infrastructure projects and the need for precise documentation, especially for those with proficiency in software like AutoCAD or Revit. Career prospects can be enhanced through certifications and experience with specialized tools, making it a viable career choice for those interested in technical design work.

Job description

CAD Detailer (Production Design)

Location: Northbridge, MA

Compensation: $70,000- $80,000- commensurate with experience.

Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated CAD Detailer to play a critical role in transforming creative exhibit concepts into real-world, buildable structures.

This position sits at the intersection of design and production—taking pre-developed 3D concepts and translating them into accurate, production-ready drawings used for fabrication.

While this is not a traditional design or engineering role, it requires strong practical problem-solving and build-focused thinking. The ideal candidate understands how things are physically constructed and can contribute ideas that improve feasibility, durability, and execution.

This is a hands-on, fast-paced role where success is defined by your ability to deliver accurate work quickly in support of production timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate conceptual 3D exhibit designs into detailed, production-ready CAD drawings and models
  • Develop structural layouts including dimensions, materials, connection points, and hardware specifications
  • Prepare part files for CNC cutting and fabrication
  • Collaborate closely with designers to ensure design intent is maintained while improving buildability
  • Provide input and suggestions on design adjustments to enhance functionality, efficiency, and structural integrity
  • Partner with carpentry, production, and warehouse teams to support execution
  • Revise drawings based on real-time feedback, timelines, and production needs
  • Ensure all work is accurate, feasible, and optimized for fabrication and assembly

Required Qualifications

  • Strong experience with 3D CAD modeling (AutoCAD or similar required)
  • Proven ability to translate conceptual designs into buildable structures
  • Experience working with wood and/or metal fabrication (wood preferred)
  • Familiarity with CNC file preparation and manufacturing processes
  • Hands-on understanding of construction, fabrication, or production environments
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines
  • Stable work history with demonstrated commitment in prior roles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in trade shows, exhibits, or temporary structures (highly preferred)
  • Background in millwork, custom woodworking, or similar fabrication industries
  • Experience with permanent installations (e.g., museums, corporate interiors, retail environments)
  • Experience preparing part files for CNC cutting
  • Prior collaboration with both creative/design and production teams
  • Additional experience with metal fabrication is a plus

What We’re Looking For

  • Candidates with direct exhibit or trade show experience are ideal
  • Candidates without exhibit experience will be considered if they have strong 3D modeling and fabrication knowledge
  • Experience in adjacent industries (millwork, museum exhibits, permanent installs, interiors) is highly transferable
  • A practical, build-focused mindset—someone who understands how designs come to life physically
  • Someone who can contribute ideas and solutions—not just execute instructions
