How much do cad cnc jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for cad cnc in the United States is $26.53, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.63 and $29.09 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Cad Cnc position, and why are they important?

To succeed as a CAD CNC professional, you need strong skills in computer-aided design (CAD), computer numerical control (CNC) programming, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, often achieved through technical education or apprenticeships. Mastery of CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), CNC machine operation, and familiarity with G-code, as well as certifications like Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA), are highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are essential soft skills for ensuring projects move from design to production smoothly. These skills collectively enable efficient and accurate part production, minimize errors, and support collaboration in engineering and manufacturing environments.

Will AI replace CNC programmers?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist CNC programmers by optimizing tool paths and automating routine tasks, but it is unlikely to fully replace skilled CNC programmers who require expertise in machine setup, troubleshooting, and process optimization. Human oversight remains essential for complex or custom manufacturing jobs, and programming skills are still in demand. AI tools serve as complements that enhance productivity rather than complete replacements for experienced professionals.

What is a Cad Cnc job?

A CAD CNC job involves using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed technical drawings and computer numerical control (CNC) programming to convert designs into machine instructions. Professionals in this role work in manufacturing, engineering, or fabrication industries to design, program, and oversee CNC machines that cut, shape, and assemble materials. They must have expertise in both CAD modeling and CNC machining processes to ensure precision, efficiency, and quality in production.

Can a CNC machinist make 100k a year?

CNC machinists can potentially earn $100,000 annually, especially with advanced skills, certifications, experience, and working in high-demand industries or locations. Achieving this salary often requires proficiency with CAD/CAM software, precision machining, and sometimes overtime or supervisory roles.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in a CAD CNC role?

In a typical day, a CAD CNC professional spends time creating and modifying engineering drawings using CAD software, programming CNC machines, and overseeing the setup and operation of machines to ensure parts are manufactured to exact specifications. The role often requires close collaboration with engineers, machinists, and quality control teams to troubleshoot design or production issues. You’ll balance time at a computer designing components with hands-on work on the shop floor. Daily responsibilities can also include maintaining equipment, updating production records, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This variety helps keep the work dynamic and provides opportunities to continuously learn and improve manufacturing processes.

Is CAD a stressful job?

CAD/CNC operators and designers often work in fast-paced manufacturing environments where meeting deadlines and precision requirements can create stress. The job requires attention to detail, technical skills, and sometimes long or irregular hours, which can contribute to stress levels. However, workload and stress vary depending on the employer and project complexity.

How much is a CNC machinist paid?

CNC machinists typically earn an average hourly wage between $20 and $30, with annual salaries ranging from $40,000 to $60,000 depending on experience, location, and certifications. Skilled machinists proficient in CAD/CAM software and operating CNC machines are often paid higher. Compensation can also vary based on the complexity of the work and the industry sector.

Job Title: CAD/CAM Designer

Job Description

We are seeking a CAD/CAM Designer with strong SolidWorks expertise and a CNC/router programming background to support the design and manufacturing of precision ceramic components. In this role, you bridge engineering and production by creating detailed 3D models, generating efficient toolpaths, and optimizing parts for machining to ensure accuracy, quality, and manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Create precise 3D models and detailed drawings in SolidWorks for precision ceramic components.
  • Develop and maintain CAD files and documentation to support engineering and production teams.
  • Generate CAM programs and toolpaths for CNC machines, with a focus on router-based machining.
  • Optimize part designs for manufacturability, ensuring components are suitable for machining and assembly.
  • Interpret and apply technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to guide design and programming work.
  • Use GD&T principles to define and communicate dimensional and tolerance requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design and manufacturing issues.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience in a CAD/CAM, mechanical design, or machining environment.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including 3D modeling and creation of detailed drawings.
  • Experience with CAM software and CNC programming, preferably for router-based equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints accurately.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and manufacturing processes.
  • Hands-on familiarity with machining, fabrication, or shop environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • background in mechanical design, CAD/CAM, or machining-related disciplines.
  • Experience optimizing toolpaths and machining strategies for precision components.
  • Comfort working in environments where both design and hands-on shop work are required.

Work Environment

You work in a production-oriented environment focused on the design and machining of precision ceramic components. The role involves regular interaction with engineering, machining, and fabrication teams, as well as time spent in a shop setting around CNC machines and router equipment. You use SolidWorks and CAM software daily to create models, drawings, and toolpaths, and you apply GD&T and manufacturing best practices to support reliable, high-quality production.
