What is a CAD CAM operator?

CAD CAM Operators are professionals who use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to design and produce products or components. They create detailed technical drawings and convert them into instructions for manufacturing machines. Their role bridges the gap between engineering design and actual production, ensuring that products are manufactured accurately and efficiently. CAD CAM Operators often work in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAD CAM operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CAD CAM Operator, you need strong technical skills in computer-aided design and manufacturing, as well as a relevant technical diploma or certification. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Mastercam, along with experience in CNC programming, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills that set top performers apart. These competencies are essential for creating precise designs and instructions, ensuring efficient production, and minimizing costly errors in manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by a CAD CAM operator when working with interdisciplinary teams?

CAD CAM Operators often collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and machinists, which can present challenges such as interpreting design intent, ensuring file compatibility, and meeting varying technical standards. Effective communication is crucial to clarify requirements and resolve discrepancies between digital models and manufacturing capabilities. Proactively seeking feedback and staying updated on both software and machinery advances can help overcome these challenges and contribute to smoother project execution.

What is the difference between Cad Cam Operator vs CNC Programmer?

AspectCad Cam OperatorCNC Programmer
CredentialsTypically requires a diploma or certificate in CAD/CAM softwareRequires similar certifications, often with additional programming courses
Work EnvironmentWorks in manufacturing or workshop settings, operating CAD/CAM softwareWorks in manufacturing, creating detailed CNC code for machines
Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive industriesUsed in similar industries, focusing on machine code creation
Job FocusDesigning and preparing CAD/CAM files for manufacturingWriting and optimizing CNC programs for machining processes

Both roles involve CAD/CAM software, but Cad Cam Operators focus on preparing files, while CNC Programmers write detailed machine code. They often work together in manufacturing environments to ensure efficient production processes.

Is a CAD Cam Operator a stressful job?

A CAD Cam Operator typically works in manufacturing or engineering environments, operating computer-aided design and manufacturing equipment. The job can involve tight deadlines and attention to detail, which may contribute to stress, but it generally depends on workload, workplace conditions, and individual skills. Proper training and experience can help manage job-related stress effectively.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior CAD/CAM Programmer to join a growing custom manufacturing operation specializing in precision plastic fabrication and thermoforming. This is a highly technical, hands-on role that will report directly to the Head of Engineering and play a key role in supporting design, programming, manufacturing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The ideal candidate will bring strong CAD/CAM expertise, CNC programming experience, and a passion for solving manufacturing challenges. While this position offers a pathway into technical leadership and training responsibilities, the primary focus will remain on hands-on engineering support, CNC programming, fixture design, tooling development, and manufacturing optimization.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys being deeply involved in both engineering and production while helping guide future improvements and mentoring team members over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and modify CAD models, manufacturing drawings, tooling designs, and production fixtures
  • Develop and optimize CAM programs for CNC machining operations, including multi-axis applications
  • Support setup and operation of CNC routers and related manufacturing equipment
  • Design tooling, fixtures, molds, and production aids to improve manufacturing efficiency
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to resolve manufacturing challenges and improve processes
  • Troubleshoot programming, tooling, setup, and production issues on the shop floor
  • Review part designs for manufacturability and recommend process improvements
  • Assist with project planning, estimating, and manufacturing workflow support
  • Maintain documentation related to engineering changes, tooling, fixtures, and CNC programs
  • Support quality initiatives through blueprint interpretation, GD&T application, and inspection verification
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members as needed

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of CAD/CAM programming experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong experience with CAD design, CAM programming, and CNC machining processes
  • Experience creating tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing support equipment
  • Hands-on CNC setup experience with multi-axis machining equipment
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, manufacturing processes, and production workflows
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T requirements
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities
  • Ability to work independently while supporting cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in plastic fabrication, thermoforming, CNC routing, or related manufacturing environments
  • Experience programming 3-axis and 5-axis CNC equipment
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, CAMWorks, or similar CAD/CAM software
  • Previous mentoring, training, or technical leadership experience
  • Experience working with Fagor controls or similar CNC control systems

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who wants to remain hands-on while growing into a technical leadership role.
