Mission or Goal of Unit: The Comprehensive Autonomic Center(CAC) at Children’s Hospital of Richmond is dedicated to deliveringintegrated, interdisciplinary, and developmentally informed carefor children and young adults with complex autonomic disorders. TheCenter advances this mission through excellence in clinicalservice, innovative program development, and rigorous research andtraining. The CAC unites key specialties — including neurology,psychology, gastroenterology, PM&R, cardiology, genetics, andphysical therapy — to provide seamless diagnostic, treatment, andrehabilitation services across the pediatric–adult continuum. Withevaluation sites on the main academic campus and in the community,as well as a dedicated intensive rehabilitation program, the CAC isstructured to ensure comprehensive, accessible, and coordinatedcare for patients and families. As a core member of thisinterdisciplinary team, the pediatric psychologist will play avital role in delivering evidence‑based clinical services,contributing to research initiatives, and shaping programdevelopment within the CAC.
Chief Purpose of this Position in Support of Above Mission orGoal: The goal of this position is to fully integrate pediatricpsychology into the pediatric medical subspecialty environment atCHoR, fostering close, collaborative, and supportive relationshipswith community pediatricians, hospital‑based physician specialists,and colleagues. Teaching is an expected component of the role, andresearch and other scholarly activities are both encouraged andsupported. As a core member of the Comprehensive Autonomic Center(CAC) team, the psychologist will provide outpatient andday‑treatment/inpatient evaluation and intervention services forchildren and young adults with autonomic disorders, including butnot limited to postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), chronicfatigue syndrome, functional abdominal pain, irritable bowelsyndrome (IBS), cyclic vomiting syndrome, migraine, fibromyalgia,and other chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPC). A fullautonomic testing laboratory is embedded within the CAC, supportingcomprehensive interdisciplinary assessment.
The psychologist will lead the pediatric and young adultday‑program interdisciplinary treatment team, working closely withadult psychologists within the adult CAC programs to ensurecontinuity across the lifespan. The role also includescross‑coverage of pediatric GI psychology services—such as obesity,inflammatory bowel disease, and constipation/encopresis—andreciprocal coverage from psychologists within the GI program.
This position also includes direction of the pediatric component ofan intensive interdisciplinary autonomic and pain day‑program.Primary responsibilities include outpatient and inpatientconsultation‑liaison services, brief and longer‑term psychologicalintervention, collaboration with medical and psychosocial teams,and development of new clinical programs, including the integrationof psychological services into emerging autonomic interdisciplinaryclinics. The psychologist will also have opportunities tocollaborate on an extensive brain‑imaging research programinvestigating the etiology and mechanisms of POTS and COPC, as wellas participate in a community education initiative focused onpediatric pain and chronic overlapping pain conditions.
Responsibilities:
  • Teaching: Faculty members will have teachingresponsibilities in the area of Comprehensive Autonomic CenterPsychology. Contribute to didactics, case conferences, andinterdisciplinary training that strengthen understanding ofautonomic disorders and chronic overlapping pain conditions.
  • Research: Participate in and help advance CAC‑basedresearch, including brain‑imaging studies examining mechanismsunderlying POTS and COPC.
  • Service: Foster collaborative relationships withcommunity pediatricians, hospital‑based specialists, and colleaguesacross psychology and psychiatry to strengthen integratedcare.
  • Clinical: Provide outpatient and day‑treatment/inpatientpsychological evaluation and intervention for children and youngadults with autonomic disorders and related chronic painconditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires a doctoral degree in clinical or counselingpsychology, with Virginia licensure or license‑eligibility; boardeligibility is required.
  • Ideal candidates will have experience assessing and treatingmental health concerns and complex pediatric medical conditions,including those outlined in the CAC program.
  • Experience with clinical care of patients ages birth to 21
  • Experience with education of house-staff, medical students, andothers
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism, and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member atVCU
