About this Role

Substation Foreman at Irby Construction Company shall possess a minimum of one (4) years of experience in a Journeymen electrical role. Substation, Commercial, or Industrial construction Journeymen electrical experience is a plus. Journeymen electricians must have a valid journeymen electrician card or be able to pass the Journeymen electricians test per government standards. The individual will possess all of the skills required for assignment from the foreman for complete electrical installations.  Such an employee shall also have in depth knowledge of all applicable OSHA codes and standards, as well as the National Electrical Code. THIS JOB IS FOR TEXAS FOR SEVERAL LOCATIONS.

What You'll Do
  • Typical Substation construction from Greenfield to Remodels. This includes
    • Trenching for ground grid & conduits
    • Backfilling and compacting
    • Foundation drilling, digging and installation
    • Lifting placing and setting structural steel
    • Lifting placing and installing insulators and busswork
    • Lifting, placing & installing substation equipment such as breakers, metering, transformers, arrestors etc.
    • Moving and pulling control cable to medium voltage cable
    • Placing finish stone and smoothing out the yard

Job Specific Duties

  • Being able to read and understand control cable schedules from the client.
  • Ability to ensure that conduit sizes are correct for control cable pulls and installation techniques.
  • Have the knowledge or ability to read P&C prints for proper termination of multiple conductor control cables up to 12/C #12 all the way down to 1/C 4/0 cables.
  • Have the knowledge or ability to learn medium voltage terminations up to 34.5kv terminations.
    • Irby does offer medium voltage termination training and certification.
  • Knowledge base to understand DC systems as well as AC systems.
  • Supplying insight on project construction as far a control cable pulling, installation and termination.
  • Ability & skill set to work in energized panels
  • Knowledge of electrical, below grade or concrete foundation trade a plus.
  • High Voltage Substation construction knowledge or experience a plus.
  • Accountable for quality of work to ensure that it is being performed according to specifications.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to stay out of town. Typical work weeks are 4-10 hour shifts or 5-10 hour shifts. Available to travel as the project requires.
  • Willing to work over-time and be able to work extended periods of time.
  • May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
  • May attend training classes or seminars to gather knowledge of new processes, safety regulations and/or refresher training.
  • Walking and working across uneven terrain.
  • Climbing on and off large trucks and equipment.
  • Must be able to work outside 100% of the time. We work in inclement weather that includes heat, cold, rain and possible snow.
  • Able to lift in excess 50 pounds on a daily basis.
  • Willing to work off the ground in man baskets. Normal working heights are 20'-60' with the possibility of working at 120' heights.
  • Must be able to work around energized systems.
  • Must be able and willing to assist with other activities while not actively performing Journeymen electrician duties.
