Amphenol Fiber Systems International (AFSI), based in Allen, Texas, is a leading manufacturer of harsh-environment fiber optic connectivity products serving the military, telecommunications, and industrial markets worldwide. Since 1993, AFSI has built a reputation for delivering reliable, high-performance fiber optic systems engineered to operate in the toughest conditions.

Our Mission

Our mission is to be the world’s most advanced harsh environment fiber optic company by building a culture where curiosity is core, teamwork is fostered, continuous improvement is routine, and attention to detail defines our success.

About the Role

The Cable and Wire Harness Design Engineering Manager leads a team of engineers and drafters in the design and development of complex cable assemblies and wire harnesses, with a strong focus on harness architecture, detailed interconnect design, routing, breakout configuration, labeling, and build documentation. This role provides technical support for existing products throughout their lifecycle and partners with product management, operations, and sales to ensure design accuracy, manufacturability, and successful program execution.

What You'll Do

Team Leadership & People Management

  • Directly manage 5-10 design engineers and drafters, including hiring, performance management, career development, and workload/resource planning across concurrent programs
  • Establish design standards, review cadences, and mentoring structures to develop engineers across experience levels
  • Partner with HR on compensation planning, promotion cases, and succession planning for the design team

Technical & Program Execution

  • Direct the design and development of cable/wire harness assemblies and fiber optic interconnect systems, ensuring compliance with MIL-DTL, MIL-PRF, and customer-specific specifications
  • Own engineering deliverables against program schedules, including drawings, GD&T packages, BOMs, ICDs, and qualification test plans
  • Review and approve engineering designs, drawing packages, and change orders (ECOs/ECNs) originating from the team
  • Lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions for design-related quality escapes

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the engineering interface to Program Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Sales on active and proposed programs
  • Support new business proposals with technical scoping, feasibility assessment, and rough-order-of-magnitude engineering estimates
  • Coordinate with customer engineering teams on interface control, design reviews, and qualification requirements

Process & Continuous Improvement

  • Drive standardization of design practices, CAD/PDM workflows (SolidWorks), and drawing templates across the group
  • Identify and implement process improvements to reduce design cycle time and first-pass yield issues
  • Support internal and customer audits related to engineering design controls

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related engineering discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering leadership experience multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Experience leading new product development from concept through production
