Key responsibilities

  • Read and interpret shop drawings, architectural drawings, plans, sketches, and specifications.

  • Take projects from drawings through fabrication, finishing, assembly, and completion.

  • Manage assigned projects and keep production on schedule.

Job description

We are looking for a highly experienced Cabinet Maker / Custom Millwork Fabricator who can take a custom project from plans to finished product.

This is not a repetitive cabinet-production position. Our projects vary constantly and can include custom cabinetry, TV units, light boxes, retail displays, event installations, architectural millwork, scenic elements, furniture, and one-off specialty builds.

We need a journeyman-level craftsman and problem solver who can look at a drawing, determine how something should be built, select the proper materials and construction methods, and complete the project to a high standard.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret shop drawings, architectural drawings, plans, sketches, and specifications
  • Take projects from drawings through fabrication, finishing, assembly, and completion
  • Create cut lists, material lists, and fabrication plans
  • Determine the best construction methods for custom and one-off projects
  • Build custom cabinetry, millwork, furniture, displays, light boxes, TV units, scenic pieces, and specialty fabricated elements
  • Operate CNC routers and other professional woodworking equipment
  • Operate table saws, sliding table saws, routers, sanders, planers, jointers, and other shop machinery
  • Source and specify lumber, plywood, MDF, hardware, laminates, plastics, finishes, and specialty materials
  • Perform high-quality staining, painting, spraying, and finish preparation
  • Apply Formica, laminates, veneers, and edge banding
  • Perform vinyl and graphic application
  • Work with acrylic, PVC, Sintra, plastics, aluminum, and other specialty fabrication materials
  • Perform basic metal fabrication when required
  • Understand basic electrical components used in light boxes, displays, and fabricated installations
  • Troubleshoot fabrication and design issues
  • Maintain a high level of fit, finish, and overall craftsmanship
  • Coordinate and direct other shop personnel when required
  • Manage assigned projects and keep production on schedule
  • Assist with on-site installations when required

What We Are Looking For

We are specifically looking for someone with a strong cabinet making, custom millwork, or high-end woodworking background who has progressed beyond simply assembling parts.

The right person should be capable of being handed a set of plans and taking responsibility for figuring out how to build the job and getting it completed correctly.

You should be comfortable working independently on projects that may be completely different from one another.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Extensive professional cabinet making or custom millwork experience
  • Journeyman-level woodworking and fabrication skills
  • Strong ability to read and work from shop drawings and architectural plans
  • Ability to independently plan and execute a project from start to finish
  • Custom cabinetry and millwork construction
  • CNC router operation
  • Professional woodworking machinery
  • Precision layout, cutting, machining, assembly, and installation
  • Edge banding and laminate/Formica application
  • High-quality staining and paint finishing
  • Material estimating and sourcing
  • Strong understanding of cabinet hardware and construction methods
  • Strong problem-solving and fabrication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and finish quality

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Experience with custom event or experiential fabrication
  • Retail displays and branded environments
  • Light box fabrication
  • Acrylic and plastic fabrication
  • Vinyl application
  • Basic metalworking
  • Basic electrical and LED lighting
  • Crew leadership
  • Project management
  • CAD/CAM or CNC programming experience

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is the type of fabricator who can be given a drawing for something they have never built before, understand what the designer is trying to accomplish, determine how to construct it, source what is needed, fabricate it, finish it, and deliver a professional finished product.

We value versatility, craftsmanship, independence, and problem-solving ability more than experience producing one specific type of cabinet or product.
