A Cath Lab Radiographer is a healthcare professional who specializes in using imaging technology, such as X-rays and fluoroscopy, to assist cardiologists during catheterization procedures. They help guide the placement of catheters and stents in the heart and blood vessels, ensuring accurate imaging for diagnosis and treatment. Their responsibilities include operating imaging equipment, monitoring patients, and working closely with the medical team to ensure patient safety.

What does a cath lab radiographer do?

A typical day for a Cath Lab Radiographer involves preparing and operating imaging equipment during procedures such as angiograms, stent placements, and pacemaker insertions, while ensuring radiation safety and accurate image capture. You’ll work closely with interventional cardiologists, nurses, and technicians to provide real-time imaging support and patient monitoring throughout each procedure. This role demands readiness for emergency cases and flexibility in workflow, as patient priorities can change quickly. Familiarity with complex imaging equipment such as fluoroscopy machines, digital radiography systems, and advanced contrast administration protocols is standard, as is BLS or ACLS certification. Exceptional attention to detail, the ability to work well in high-pressure situations, and strong communication with the healthcare team set top candidates apart. These skills ensure accurate imaging, patient safety, and effective collaboration during time-sensitive cardiac interventions.

Additional specialized training in cardiovascular imaging and invasive procedures is often required, along with state licensure if applicable. Strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced medical environment are essential.
