As of Sep 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for cad design engineer in the United States is $37.41, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $28.85 and $41.83 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a CAD design engineer?

CAD Design Engineers are professionals who use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed technical drawings and plans for products, machinery, buildings, or systems. They work closely with engineers, architects, and other team members to develop precise designs that meet project specifications and industry standards. Their work is essential in transforming ideas and concepts into accurate, manufacturable designs and prototypes. CAD Design Engineers often specialize in fields such as mechanical, civil, electrical, or aerospace engineering and must stay current with the latest software and technology advancements.

How does a CAD design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

CAD Design Engineers regularly work alongside multidisciplinary teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management. They often participate in design reviews, incorporate feedback from engineers and clients, and adjust models to meet production requirements. Effective communication and collaboration are key, as design changes may impact timelines, costs, or compliance standards. This collaborative environment not only enhances project outcomes but also helps CAD Design Engineers broaden their technical and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAD design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CAD Design Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, technical drawing, and a relevant engineering degree or certification. Proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, and familiarity with industry standards are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you excel in collaborating with teams and interpreting project requirements. These skills ensure accurate designs, efficient project execution, and successful integration of engineering solutions.

What is the difference between Cad Design Engineer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectCad Design EngineerMechanical Drafter
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or Design, CAD certificationsAssociate's degree or technical diploma, CAD training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firms, manufacturing companiesDrafting departments, manufacturing plants, engineering firms
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across engineering, product design, and manufacturingPrimarily in manufacturing and construction industries

Cad Design Engineers focus on creating detailed 3D models and engineering designs, often requiring a background in engineering principles. Mechanical Drafters typically prepare technical drawings based on engineers' specifications, emphasizing drafting skills. Both roles utilize CAD software but differ in scope and complexity, with Cad Design Engineers involved in the conceptual and detailed design process, while Mechanical Drafters focus on translating ideas into technical drawings.

Are CAD Design Engineers paid well?

CAD Design Engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Professionals with advanced skills in CAD software like AutoCAD or SolidWorks and relevant certifications tend to have higher earning potential. Overall, the role offers solid compensation compared to many entry-level engineering positions.

What does a CAD design engineer do?

A CAD design engineer creates detailed technical drawings and 3D models using computer-aided design software to develop products, machinery, or structures. They collaborate with engineers and architects, often using tools like AutoCAD or SolidWorks, and ensure designs meet specifications and standards throughout the development process.

Key responsibilities

  • Own CAD data architecture and integration across vehicle/product platforms, including model hierarchy, configuration management, and workflows.

  • Design parts and subassemblies from concept through DFM review to production release, ensuring manufacturability and fit/function.

  • Debug and resolve CAD integration issues such as assembly conflicts and referencing errors at scale.

Job description

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.

ALSO is looking for a Staff CAD Design and Integration Engineer to design manufacturable parts and own CAD integration across our vehicle/product platforms.

What You'll Do

  • Own CAD data architecture and integration across a large product program — model hierarchy, configuration management, PDM/PLM workflows, release processes

  • Enterprise grade CAD and PLM skill necessary to manage large and complex vehicle assemblies in CAD, BOM and structure the data to support concurrent CAD development contributions from many design engineers

  • Design parts and subassemblies end-to-end, from concept through DFM review to production release

  • Apply broad DFM knowledge across manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, injection molding, casting, etc.) to guide design decisions up front, not just review them after the fact

  • Own tolerance stack-ups, GD&T, and fit/function analysis for complex assemblies

  • Drive design reviews and design-for-manufacturability sign-off with manufacturing, supply chain, and quality

  • Prototype, test, and iterate on designs to validate fit, function, and durability before production release

  • Set and enforce CAD standards, naming conventions, and best practices across design teams

  • Debug and resolve CAD integration issues (assembly conflicts, referencing errors, cross-tool data loss) at scale

  • Mentor engineers on both manufacturing-aware design practices and CAD tooling

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 8+ years in mechanical design engineering, with direct ownership of parts that shipped to production

  • Deep, hands-on CATIA V5 or V6 proficiency — expert-level, not admin-level

  • Broad, practical DFM experience across multiple manufacturing processes

  • Experience managing CAD data/PLM at product scale (large assemblies, multiple contributors, complex BOMs)

  • Strong GD&T and tolerance stack-up skills

  • Track record of being the technical bridge between design intent and manufacturability

  • Experience with PLM systems (Teamcenter, Windchill, 3DEXPERIENCE, or similar) — nice to have

  • Scripting/automation experience for CAD workflows — nice to have

The salary for this position ranges from $200,000 - $221,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.

Perks & Benefits

  • Robust health coverage — excellent health, dental and vision insurance covered up to 100% by ALSO with FSA & HSA options

  • One Medical membership and dedicated insurance advocates

  • Rich fertility and family building benefits with Progyny

  • Flexible time off

  • 401(k) match

Why ALSO.
