Job Description
ATANE is seeking an experienced Coating / Painting Inspector to support current and future bridge, structural steel, and transportation infrastructure projects throughout New Jersey and New York. The ideal candidate will have strong field inspection experience involving surface preparation, abrasive blasting, protective coating systems, containment, environmental compliance, and quality assurance/quality control on bridge and highway projects.
Candidates with experience working on NJDOT, NJTA, PANYNJ, NJ TRANSIT, NYSDOT, or similar public transportation/infrastructure agency projects are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
The Coating / Painting Inspector will be responsible for monitoring and documenting contractor coating operations and verifying compliance with project specifications, approved procedures, applicable standards, and agency requirements. Responsibilities may include:
• Inspect structural steel surface preparation, abrasive blasting, cleaning, and painting/coating operations.
• Verify compliance with specified SSPC/AMPP surface preparation standards and coating manufacturer requirements.
• Inspect and document containment systems and environmental protection measures associated with lead-based paint removal and abrasive blasting.
• Measure and document ambient conditions, surface temperature, relative humidity, dew point, surface profile, soluble salts, wet-film thickness, and dry-film thickness (DFT) as required.
• Verify coating materials, batch numbers, mixing, thinning, induction time, pot life, application methods, recoat intervals, and curing requirements.
• Identify coating defects and nonconforming work and document required corrective actions.
• Monitor contractor compliance with applicable OSHA, environmental, safety, and hazardous-material requirements.
• Prepare detailed daily inspection reports, photographs, quantity documentation, and other project records.
• Coordinate with Resident Engineers, contractors, agency representatives, coating manufacturers, laboratories, and other project personnel.
• Perform inspection activities during day, night, weekend, and/or off-hour operations when required.
Preferred / Required Certifications
Candidates possessing several of the following credentials will receive strong consideration:
• AMPP Certified Coatings Inspector (formerly NACE CIP) - Level 2 or Level 3 preferred
• AMPP/SSPC Bridge Coatings Inspector (BCI) certification
• SSPC/AMPP C3 - Supervisor/Competent Person Training for Deleading of Industrial Structures
• SSPC/AMPP C5 - Lead Paint Removal Refresher, where applicable
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety
• HAZWOPER 40-Hour training with current refresher, where required
• NJDOT Traffic Control Coordinator (TCC) certification
• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I, when required by assignment
• NICET Transportation Construction Inspection certification is a plus
• Additional AMPP/NACE/SSPC protective-coatings, corrosion, lead-abatement, or industrial-painting certifications are highly desirable.

Qualifications
• Experience inspecting bridge painting, structural steel coatings, rehabilitation, or similar heavy civil/infrastructure construction.
• Thorough knowledge of surface preparation and protective coating inspection procedures.
• Familiarity with AMPP/NACE/SSPC standards, coating specifications, inspection instruments, and quality-control procedures.
• Experience with lead-containing coatings, containment systems, environmental controls, and worker protection requirements is highly desirable.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, coating schedules, product data sheets, and manufacturer recommendations.
• Strong written communication skills and ability to prepare accurate, detailed field documentation.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites throughout New Jersey and New York.
• Previous NJDOT, NYSDOT or other transportation-agency inspection experience is highly desirable.
