What does a C software developer do?

A C Software Developer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications using the C programming language. They work on a range of projects, from embedded systems and operating systems to application software, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and performance. C developers often collaborate with other engineers and teams to integrate hardware and software, debug code, and optimize existing programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a C software developer?

To thrive as a C Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of C programming, algorithms, data structures, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, debugging tools such as GDB, and experience with build systems and compilers are essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top developers apart. These skills ensure efficient, reliable code development, seamless collaboration, and the ability to address complex software challenges.

What are some common challenges C software developers face when working on large-scale projects?

C Software Developers often encounter challenges related to memory management, debugging, and ensuring code portability across different platforms in large-scale projects. Since C provides low-level access to system resources, developers must be vigilant about preventing memory leaks, buffer overflows, and other vulnerabilities. Collaborating with teams also requires maintaining clear and consistent coding standards to facilitate code reviews and integration. Effective communication and thorough documentation are crucial for managing complexity and ensuring project success.

We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transmission and substation services, ensuring operational excellence, and investing to support the infrastructure needs of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute the protection-system maintenance, testing, and compliance data collection required by NERC PRC, CIP, and IRO standards.
  • Execute testing, calibration, and commissioning for SEL and GE protection platforms, SEL RTAC SCADA devices, and DFR equipment; analyze relay event reports and coordinate protection schemes with transmission operations.
  • Maintain the District relay lab and use it to validate firmware, relay settings, and Doble RTS test routines before changes are applied to in-service equipment.
  • Commission new and modified substation equipment, including relay panels, control buildings, and protection and communications infrastructure.
  • Diagnose complex protection-system faults, determine root cause, and direct corrective actions.
  • Coordinate maintenance scheduling under ERCOT seasonal restriction windows; plan and execute outage work within approved windows.
  • Provide protection, control, and automation support for the Sharyland HVDC converter station (Hitachi MACH 2/3 platform), including participation in planned maintenance, thyristor valve inspection, protection-system testing, and control-system verification.
  • Support scope oversight and documentation of Hitachi maintenance activities during OEM field-service windows.
  • Build proficiency on the HVDC platform and document OEM procedures to support HUS's evaluation of insourcing HVDC maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Summary:

Conduct must reflect Hunt and Sharyland core values: Respect for the Individual, Humility, Excellence, Innovation, Teamwork, and Integrity, and comply with the Sharyland Utilities Code of Business Conduct. Must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment before hire and every seven years thereafter.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proficiency with protective relay test equipment (OMICRON, Doble F6150, or equivalent).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, protection one-lines, and relay settings files.
  • Relay configuration and event-analysis software experience (SEL AcSELerator, SEL-5030, or equivalent).
  • Excellent field documentation, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Self-directed, professionally mature, and capable of working independently in field environments.
