Senior Embedded Linux Software Engineer – C/C++

Location: Westford, MA — Hybrid, 3 days/week onsite

Industry: Fire Detection & Safety Systems

Experience: 7+ years

About the Role

Our client is a leading organization in fire detection and safety technologies, developing the next generation of embedded applications used in critical fire alarm systems and communication gateways.

We are looking for a Senior Embedded Linux Software Engineer to join the R&D team in Westford, MA. This is a hands-on C/C++ embedded software development role covering the full software lifecycle—from architecture and development to debugging, testing, and deployment. You will work on Yocto Linux-based embedded systems and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across different locations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware and developing reliable software for safety-critical products.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, debug, test, and maintain embedded C/C++ software for fire detection communication gateway systems.
  • Develop and optimize applications running on Yocto Linux-based embedded platforms, including multi-threaded and multi-process applications.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architecture, implementation, testing, and release activities.
  • Integrate and troubleshoot embedded software using tools such as GDB, I2C debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and global development teams to prioritize features, resolve technical challenges, and deliver customer-focused solutions.
  • Contribute to software quality, security, and continuous improvement, including CVE remediation, version control, automated testing, and development process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of embedded software development experience with strong hands-on expertise in C and C++.
  • Extensive experience developing software for Yocto Linux-based embedded systems, including BitBake.
  • Strong understanding of multithreaded, multi-process, and real-time embedded application development.
  • Experience with embedded debugging and test equipment, along with the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware/software interactions.
  • Strong understanding of formal software development methodologies, with experience planning and estimating software development activities.

Nice to Have: Azure IoT, network programming, CVE remediation, Git, Artifactory, JIRA/Confluence, Bash, Make, Python, and experience with regulated or safety-critical standards such as UL/ULC.
